Lab Equipment and Apparatus - Polymer Devices (L302)

Optical Spectroscopy System

Basic Operation: Light is directed by the optical fibers to the entrance slit of the spectrograph. The light is then collected by the collimating mirror and reflected into a grating, where it is dispersed into individual wavelengths. The diffracted light is reflected by a focusing mirror to the CCD detector. Since each wavelength leaves the grating at a different angle, each has a different horizontal position when the light reaches the detector. The CCD detector then simultaneously measures the intensity of each individual wavelength and generates a spectrum based upon those intensity readings.
