Job Description

I am interested in understanding metal-sediment interactions in natural aquatic systems. Specifically, my work focuses on understanding how the reactivity of metal oxide and organic surface coatings affect the binding behavior of heavy metals. Currently, planar proxies for natural sediment surfaces are being used to investigate molecular-level interactions between heavy metals and environmentally important reactive phases. The use of these planar proxies allows for a thorough characterization of complexes formed not only under laboratory conditions, but under natural conditions as well. A large suite of wet-chemical, spectroscopic and microscopic tools is used to characterize the metal surface complexes formed. The knowledge gained from this approach will provide a molecular-level understanding of the effects of various reactive phases on the binding behavior of environmentally important contaminant metals.
