Office 603

Description

Joan Thomas received her Ph.D. in applied science from the University of South Australia in 1999. In 1972, she earned her graduate diploma in education from Flinders University of South Australia, the same institution at which she received her B.S. wit h honors. Joan has done research into the modification of the behavior of natural materials by the state of the surface. This includes the dissolution behavior of mineral sulfides and the interaction of organic molecules with clays and other naturally occ urring minerals. She previously worked as a research fellow at the Ian Wark Research Institute. She also worked at the University of South Australia on collaborative research projects with Environmental Geochemistry International (EGi), Australian Miner al research Association (AMIRA), and Rio Tinto Ltd. Joan lectured and tutored in science education for trainee school teachers and nursing students. This included supervision of trainee teacher with schools. The focus of her work at the ARC is the examin ation of organics adsorbed on the surface of fine particulate minerals using infrared spectroscopy, in particular, using Diffuse Reflection Infrared Fourier transform Spectroscopy (DRIFTS).
