HOWTO extract photons or pi0's from the framework

New page

Many people will want to analyze final states with photons. There are several key high-level analysis objects for doing this. Unless you are doing calorimetry diagnostics it is not recommend that utilize any other object besides the ones listed below. This is because various corrections to the reconstructed photon four-momentum are applied through the reconstruction chain. Using the high level objects below guarantees that you will get a photon which has the current best measurement of the four-momentum and its error matrix.

Using DPhoton objects
The DPhoton objects contain a list of all (assumed) photons reconstructed by the FCAL and the BCAL. This

The subdirectory names should give a clue as to the reaction/study. The fitting is done in MyApplication.cc. I'm not sure if JANA/GlueX software still uses this mode of operating. All of this worked at the time with the DKinFit object which existed in the main trunk. You may want to look at test_pKsKs_misspi. That reaction is gamma p --> p KS KS, where the one of the pi- from the KS is missing, but both KS mass constraints are applied.

Eugene
* BIA funding: we were cut by 1 M$, restored at the end of last week, the crisis is past
* magnet review last week: George will summarize, very positive, kudos to George for his efforts.
* magnet in BIA: may have to change plans in costing magnet effort, need to look at both hardware and software components
* Elliott asked about the status of hiring. Eugene: Offers passing through system, preliminary approval granted, 3rd position still up in the air
* another bridge position, Mississippi State, was discussed, not this year, next such position will go to Hall D, perhaps FSU
* Elton: FIU MOU may not have been signed by FIU, there is a question about whether the ad has been placed
* approval for MOU with both NCA&T and UNCW obtained from Alison Lung
* Elton and Sascha: the Catholic MOU needs to be pursued. There is a question about whether the goniometer is included or not.
* Performance appraisals: going at steady pace
* with 3.5 ft of concrete issue and a full retention pond, work has been suspended on the Hall with attendant schedule delay

David
* working on reconstruction of multi-particle final states
* exploring PrimEx eta production issue

Tim
* landmark decisions on CDC last week:
** made choice of straw, aluminum on mylar
** crimp pins: use the Hall B ones, tack on their order, supplier will not do copper anymore
* has been working on solenoid testing and review preparation

Beni
* CMU construction contract: CMU asked for extension, contract wording being review by their legal department, will need renegotiation of some of points
* INT, Seattle: "we do not know much", partial wave analyses conducted thus far not liked by theorists e. g., COMPASS, resonant structures need to be included correctly

Mark
* project planning: web page for cost report, manpower effort profile, Gantt chart, task summaries for Offline Computing

Chuck
* Fastrack work for coil tests
* BCAL layout of light guides. Elton: how close? Chuck: need to locate PMT's exactly, will meet with Elton on Wed.
* working on BCAL modifications

Bill
* FDC: trying to seal major gas leaks, Casey searching for them
* analyzing effect of pressure on liquid helium containment vessel, stress analysis in progress, room temperature analysis for now
* George: analysis was done in past on as-designed, not on the as-built, the latter needed
* signing drawings on FDC

Dan
* working up to three layers on full-scale FDC prototype
* 300 cc per minute the limit of gas flow right now
* getting more hardware to increase flow
* working on work-arounds for the leak fixes; design changes will fix these issues for production chamber
* hope for 3 layers by next week
* move to cosmic ray test set up: schedule not clear, prototype now in clean tent

Sascha
* working on tagger hall simulation, implementing new geometry, optimization of quad field
* looking at simulation of microstrip chambers for use with pair spectrometer
* working on PrimEx on background issues
* Eugene asked about timescale for final decision on tagger design, Sascha said should be end of this year, he and Richard need to document a few final decisions. * Eugene asked about need for 3-d mode? Sascha and Bill replied that Bill will do that for mechanical (stress analysis) and magnetic field.

Simon
* working multiparticle reactions: <math>\gamma p\rightarrow\pi(1600)n</math> and <math>\gamma p\rightarrow b_1\pi^-p</math>, <math>b_1\rightarrow\omega\pi^+</math>, <math>\omega\rightarrow\pi^+\pi-\pi^0</math>
* goal is to measure efficiency

Slava
* modeling CDC parts
* solid model for assemblies
* tweaking existing layout as well
* decision on how to seal HV cables made, prototype testing will be done
* Eugene asked if all connections designed. Slava replied that layout exists which shows how it will be done. Problem with sealing HV cables was last thing addressed.

Elton
* "two minutes ago" Sensl units arrived, 10 are in the box
* info from Carl on Hamamatsu arrays is positive, uniformity, pde as expected at room temperature, he still needs to look at dark rate, radiation hardness

+

Assuming the central holes of the FCAL, TOF, and FDC need to be widened due to EM background, the acceptance tables in HDParSim would need to be updated.

+

The size of the background could be used as a measure of our sensitivity to an exotic wave (e.g. if the background from the Delta reaction is 10%, it becomes pretty dubious to fish out a 5% signal from the pi+ pi+ pi- n reaction).

-

#) A 6/32 blind threaded hole is drilled in the endplate.

-

#) A 6/32 set screw is screwed into the hole. We can use conducting epoxy to improve the connection if needed.

-

#) A 1/4 inch electrical standoff with a 6/32 tapped hole is screwed onto the set screw. There are three possible variations on this for the end in contact with the endplate.

-

##) There is room for the 1/4 inch, nothing specicial

-

##) There is not quite enough room for the 1/4 inch due to the heads of the feedthrus extending 1/10" above the surface of the plate. We can order a standard 1/4 standoff that has a diameter of 188 for the last .133 inches. This comes from McMaster-Carr.

-

##) Or we can make in house modifications:

-

###) we can (in house as needed) taper the end of the standof down to ~188 from 250 so it will fit,

-

###) we can (in house) as needed remove some material from the head of the feed throughs so that the 1/4 in can reach the endplate.

-

#) A .156 inch hole is drilled through the lucite plate.

-

#) A 6/32 set screw goes through the lucite plate and screws into the standoff.

-

#) Epoxy, or conducting epoxy in placed around the 6/32 set screw.

-

#) A 1/4 inch electrical standoff with blind 6/32 holes is screwed

-

#) The connector is attached to the standoff.

-

-

We also would like to propose the standoffs that hold the HV card be on opposite sides of the card, rather than both on the same side. This gives less chance that the card will tilt during installation and removal.<br>

Agenda
* Discuss Crimp pin design and manufacture
* Review spacer tube sealing
* Review Slava HV board mounting http://www.jlab.org/~vgr/CDC%2011-10-2009/
* Straw testing

New Action Items
Action Items/Decisions from Previous Meeting
* Slava to layout new setup to attach one connector stud to al plate and attach HV board directly to connector. will relocate connectors and check clearances with 8mm bend rad in wire
* Tim to pursue Medelec 2 piece crimp pin quotes. Medelec said they could not make the one designed
** Medelec will not make any more copper crimp pins of any design unless the order had already been placed. Tim Investigated other manufacturers to no avail. Hole/length ratio too small
* Beni to complete rad tests of straws in the next couple of weeks and send straws back to CMU for test
** straws back at CMU
* Have endplates delivered to JLAB for spot check of hole coordinates. Tim to arrange with survey group
** Vendor to independently check with Faro arm. Do we still widh to bring these to JLAB?
* Fernando to look at stripping tools to reduce the need for large pcb on connector
**<font color=blue> Stripping tool located, inner pad 3mm, 2mm gap , HV outer pad 6mm. Total wdth of pcb 30.5mm, 8mm bend rad required for cable</font>
Notes
# O-ring: The O-ring used on the prototype is a #103 BUNA-N Soft. The through-hole is 156 and the shoulder is a 9/32 into which the O-ring is forced.
# Small modifications to connector/grounding assembly
* Slava will layout Fernando's stud grounding option
**<font color=blue> Opted for connector to al plate standoff stud design</font>
* Gary to supply sketch of CMU grounding option
**<font color=blue> see below</font>
* Gary to check if he can still get conductive rubber boot used previously
* Slava to update layout of cable to crimp pin per discussion
* Tim to see if cable restraint bushing can be made
* What needs to be done on al plate to ensure electrical connection? all
**<font color=blue> Decided on local cleaning and prep during assy</font>
* Gary to get sample of polycarbonate to test

Ground HV Card Through Standoff
Attached is a rough sketch showing the proposed stand-off scheme.
#) A 6/32 blind threaded hole is drilled in the endplate.
#) A 6/32 set screw is screwed into the hole. We can use conducting epoxy to improve the connection if needed.
#) A 1/4 inch electrical standoff with a 6/32 tapped hole is screwed onto the set screw. There are three possible variations on this for the end in contact with the endplate.
##) There is room for the 1/4 inch, nothing specicial
##) There is not quite enough room for the 1/4 inch due to the heads of the feedthrus extending 1/10" above the surface of the plate. We can order a standard 1/4 standoff that has a diameter of 188 for the last .133 inches. This comes from McMaster-Carr.
##) Or we can make in house modifications:
###) we can (in house as needed) taper the end of the standof down to ~188 from 250 so it will fit,
###) we can (in house) as needed remove some material from the head of the feed throughs so that the 1/4 in can reach the endplate.
#) A .156 inch hole is drilled through the lucite plate.
#) A 6/32 set screw goes through the lucite plate and screws into the standoff.
#) Epoxy, or conducting epoxy in placed around the 6/32 set screw.
#) A 1/4 inch electrical standoff with blind 6/32 holes is screwed
#) The connector is attached to the standoff.

Mounting the HV card
We also would like to propose the standoffs that hold the HV card be on opposite sides of the card, rather than both on the same side. This gives less chance that the card will tilt during installation and removal.<br>
Agenda
* Discuss Crimp pin design and manufacture
* Review spacer tube sealing
* Review Slava HV board mounting http://www.jlab.org/~vgr/CDC%2011-10-2009/
* Straw testing

New page

FDC Weekly Meeting

Date: November 19, 2009

Participants: Daniel, Mark S., Beni, Bill, Casey, Simon, Mark I., Eugene, Glenn, Brian

Next Meeting: November 26, 2009 @ 1:30 a.m.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
General Construction Updates
- We are still battling with leak isses associated with the gas spacers.
We have two different versions. One uses a harder o-ring (50 durometer)
and the other a softer o-ring (8 durometer) built up with an 8-mil tape
shim down in the o-ring trough. On frame P1, which is installed in the
single-layer prototype, it also has a few gas leaks up through the vias on
one protion of the STB. Casey has attempt to seal these up. Given also
that the spacer ring must pass across signal traces that stick up by 3 to
4 mils (!), it may be that we will just have to do the best we can and make
do. But there has got to be a better design solution so that we are not
forced to battle a leaky chamber until the end of time.
- Fernando has completed his test plan on the single layer prototype using
a single anode preamp board and a single cathode preamp board, both
stuffed with the new GAS-II preamps. He is preparing a write-up of his
results that will be distributed soon. Fernando did not encounter any
surprises and all seemed to follow expectations (chamber and preamp boards).
As a quick summary, the signal-to-noise levels on the cathode strip signals
were about 20 to 1. This is likely due to the jury-rigged readout connection
and use of an oscilloscope that was known to generate significant EMF.
Firmer numbers will be extracted at a later time. It looked like the
performance of the long wires and the short wires was very similar. Same for
the long cathode strips and the short cathode strips.
- A comparison of the single-layer FDC prototype in a horizontal vs. a
vertical configuration revealed no obvious differences in performance.
This is good news as a sizeable portion of our test plan calls for using
cosmic rays with the chamber in a horizontal orientation.
- The issue with the voltage differences between the full-scale prototype
and the small-scale prototype has been fully resolved. We took a sense
wire sample from a small-scale prototype wire plane and measured its
diameter to be 25 um. We have 20 um diameter wire in the full-scale
prototype. This size difference explains the different plateau voltages.
DSC verified this with GARFIELD calculations of the chamber gain.
- It turns out that only a portion of the production wire order for the FDC
and CDC has arrived. 4 spools of 20 um W wire and 4 spools of 80 um Cu-Be
wire. Each spool holds 1000 m. DSC and Bill met with the SEM folks for an
information exchange meeting. We prepared a set of testing instructions and
circulated it to Curtis and Eugene. It has been turned over to the SEM folks
who are working on a quote.
- The plan for the next several days is to add the second layer to the
prototype. The system will be leak checked and HV checks will be performed.
We will spot check some of the wire and cathode signals to be sure that
there are no gross differences with what we have already seen. We expect
to be ready to add the third layer after that.
- The parts n' pieces for the third full-scale prototype layer will not be
ready until after Thanksgiving unless Mark and Casey can finish cathode
preparations and cathode to wire frame lamination next week. The plan is
to have the full-scale prototype assembly completed by December 4.
- The preliminary FDC stack assembly document draft is located at:
/u/group/halld/Engineering/PRELIMINARY DOCUMENTS. The document will
continue to be fleshed out during the assembly procedure for the
full-scale prototype. We will have to add steps in our construction plans
for leak checking.

Wire Frame Update
- Wire frame P4 has completed its electrical QA check after several minor
repairs associated with soldering problems with the preamp connectors.
The components and regions that gave us HV breakdown problems on P1 have
been potted in Humaseal. Wire frame P3 will then follow.
- Wire frame P4 has been laminated to its associated cathode (that is part
of a cathode sandwich). This frame structure is ready for inclusion as
part of the second layer of the stack.
- We need to have a dedicated meeting to design what the schedule for
work on the Phase 3 wire winding will be. The highest priority for
work scheduling will be doing work on upgrades of the wire winding
facility. This includes a better strongback design, the design and
construction of precision combs, modification to the wire winding
table, and a list of other items with the system. Stay tuned, more
to come.
- The wire frame construction document is located at:
/u/group/halld/Engineering/PRELIMINARY DOCUMENTS. He will include
the information on the wire electroplating process as well.
- The parts of the jig to use for the wire electroplating operation
are in our hands. They will be assembled as we find time.
- We need to prepare a document for the electrical QA of the preamp
connectors on the wire boards.
- DSC, Bill, and Fernando will plan a meeting to go over the circuit
board design work for Kim.
- Kim is following up with the contacts obtained from Peter Monaghan
regarding large-area PCBs. Kim is still in back and forth with the
board house and the board material supplier. The outlook may be rosier
than it was a few years ago. Stay tuned.

Cathode Update
- Progress updates:
* Casey has been working on soldering rigid-flex assemblies to the
second of our two cathode sandwiches. Soldering work on the first
sandwich has been completed and electrical QA checks are done.
* Even though we are nearly done with the soldering of the rigid-flex
assemblies, we ordered another stencil and will use it for the
remaining soldering work.
* The conducting epoxy used to attach the cathode board grounds between
the three cathode boards that make up a single panel were starting
to peel off. Casey has improved the design using copper tape.
- The current draft of the cathode construction document is located at:
/u/group/halld/Engineering/PRELIMINARY DOCUMENTS.
- We need to prepare a document for QA/stuffing/cleaning for the cathode
boards and a similar document for the cathode daughter boards and ground
boards.

Preamplifier Boards
- An order for more ASIC chips is expected very shortly. Fernando expects
that we will have ~40 boards ready by the end of November.

Cosmic Ray Test Stand
- Several meetings ago we focussed on the wiggles seen in the reconstructed
wire position from the cathodes (see log entry 419) in the
FDC logbook. We believe that the periodicity seen is due to the algorithm
Beni is using to determine the U and V centroids. Beni get back to this
soon. Stay tuned.

Work List
- The FDC short-term work list has been posted on the FDC web site.
This is continually being updated and DSC welcomes any feedback or
comments from the group.

He could not generate a compiler error when the rule is violated, and so the rule has been retained.

+

David will write to the email list announcing this.

+

+

+

Craig proposed that we make it a policy that code build without warnings. There was some discussion:

+

+

* David noted that when the code is tried on a new platform, warnings may arise. Often the original developer will have difficulty getting access to the new platform, a complication if warning-free code is the policy. We thought that if a good-faith effort is made in these cases the collaboration would be satisfied.

+

* There may be cases where the warnings on some platforms require a substantial amount of effort to fix while causing no real problem in code excecution. Mark thought that in those cases, an exception to the policy could be made. This would have to be noted in the comments inside the code. This addresses the concern in the previous bullet (to some extent).
