FEL Management

Highlights for the week include the following:We had a full week of commissioning activities which saw (1)the FEL linac operated in CW mode up to currents of 1.2mA into the tune-up dump at first lightenergies (38MeV); (2)a measurement of the cathode lifetime at the mA range which gavea 1/e decay time of 17 hrs (which is comfortably more than the minimum of 8 hrs needed for first light; (3)and continued progress with check-out of the diagnostic systems.

On Friday, April 17, we hosted a visit from a DOD directed energy study group that visited the laboratory to learn about the laboratory's development of SRF technology and the FEL program. J. Cook from the Navy Program Office joined the group for a briefing on his office's activities.

Also on Friday, the laboratory hosted the first of a series of weekly meetings by the ARC University Consortium to begin the detailed planning for the management and organization of the ARC Building laboratory activities.

Installation Activities

With a full week of commissioning, there was only time for installation activities during the one shift for scheduled maintenance on Thursday. During this shift we accomplished the following:

-

-

-

-

Installation and alignment of two new graphite viewers in the wiggler region.

Remote control operation of the neutral density filter (ND2) in the drive laser

Radiation surveys of the machine area after high current operation.

Installation of the trim quadrupoles in the west arc.

Other installation-related activities included:
