IR Demo Project Weekly Report, April 6-10, 1998

April 10, 1998

FEL Management

Highlights for the week, which was devoted to full time commissioning activities, include:(1) attainment of the 1 mA cw milestone for the FEL linac (this parameter is a first light requirement); (2)first operation of the FEL from the Main Control Center (MCC); and (3)continued good progress in the commissioning of electron beam diagnostics.

The FEL team congratulates Bob Legg, who has played a key role in the commissioning of the Injector Test Stand and the FEL linac commissioning. Bob's most recent contribution to the FEL project was his lead role in this week's attainment of the 1 mA cw milestone. Bob will be leaving Jefferson Lab at the end of next week to begin a new career at General Atomic in San Diego. We thank Bob for his contributions and wish him well in his new job.

A working group on atomic, molecular and optical (AMO) physics, led by Bill Cooke of CWM and Bob Jones of UVA met on Tuesday, April 7, to discuss characteristics of the FEL that would be useful for state-of-the-art AMO experiments. The group plans to establish a presence within the FEL Users Group and begin the process of developing and submitting proposals.

F. Dylla had a meeting with R. Marianelli and A. DePristo at DOE-Germantown on Thursday, April 9. The agenda of meeting included discussions of (1)the FEL user proposal submissions and review process and (2)highlights from the working groups that met last week at the Dallas ACS meeting and this week at Jefferson Lab on potential FEL applications in chemical physics and atomic physics, respectively.

Installation Activities

Except for one scheduled maintenance shift, the FEL accelerator vault was locked all week for commissioning activities. No significant installation activities were scheduled.
