IR Demo Project Weekly Report, August 17-21, 1998

August 21, 1998

Management

This week FEL commissioning activities were suspended for photogun maintenance. In addition, the FEL team and Jefferson Lab hosted the 20th International FEL Conference at Williamsburg. The conference was attended by over 270 registrants from the International FEL community. The conference schedule included 9 presentations on the IR Demo by the FEL team, 5 presentations by our potential users, and a tour of the FEL facility.

Installation/Maintenance Activities

The photogun was taken off line last Friday for a series of maintenance tasks. The duration of the task will depend on our diagnosis of potential damage by arcing and field emission on internal hardware. Planned gun maintenance activities include replacement of a getter shield to improve the pumping speed, replacement of the GaAs cathode, and replacement of external hardware for improvement of the bake-out cycle time.

A number of minor maintenance tasks will be completed this maintenance period which will probably extend until early September depending on the scope and progress made on the photogun tasks. The only major hardware item to be installed is the beam scraper assembly located at the entrance of the east recirculation arc.

Commissioning Activities

There were no machine operations this week due to the maintenance activities noted above. The commissioning team had numerous opportunities this week to compare notes on FEL performance, diagnostics and applications as we interacted with our colleagues at the FEL conference.
