IR Demo Project Weekly Report, August 24-28, 1998

Management

This week FEL operations were suspended for maintenance activities. Three days of the week were taken up by first preparing the facility for and then enduring Hurricane Bonnie. The Laboratory was officially closed on Wednesday and Thursday as most of SE Virginia watched the Hurricane batter the North Carolina coast. The lower Chesapeake received the full wrath of the storm on Thursday evening. The CEBAF site suffered a power outage that has taken most of Friday to deal with. The experience gave the Laboratory and the FEL team a very real exercise in severe storm preparations. The FEL Facility suffered no damage or flooding. As a precaution we sandbagged the entrance to the service tunnel.

This week's major activities in addition to dealing with the hurricane included: (1) continued refurbishment of photogun internal hardware; (2) final preparation of 3 micron high power optics; and (3) continued planning for the kilowatt recirculation experiments.

Maintenance Activities

With regard to the gun refurbishment: the cathode ball and anode plate were removed for minor repolishing of blemishes due to arcing damage; new, higher conductance getter shields were completed, cleaned and baked out; and numerous minor modifications to external hardware proceeded.

The 3 micron high power optics were completed and sent to China Lake where the figure and optical loss will be measured.

The beam scraper in the east arc was installed and leak checked. mechanical assembly are being analyzed to insure reliable operation.
