MEMORANDUM

cc: Division (M7), FEL Coordination Group
From: F. Dylla
Subject: IR FEL Weekly Report: August 5-9, 1996
Date: August 9, 1996
Management
A draft monthly report for July has been produced. A final report
will be released next week after the financial data has been collected.
Preparations continue for the LPC Workshop to be held on Sept.
9-10 at Jefferson Lab.
SURA Management has begun the process of inviting candidates to
serve on a Defense Applications Advisory Committee. The first
meeting will be called in the period Oct.-Dec. 96 depending on
member schedules.
Injector Test Stand
- We are holding to the updated schedule. Bake of the gun and
beamline was successfully completed this week. High-voltage conditioning
starts this afternoon (Friday, 9 August).
- Concerning the fabrication of a back-up high voltage stack
assembly:
1. Coupons of alumina are undergoing ion-implantation at LBL to parameterize the process.
2. A source has been identified for brazing the Kovar ring.
3. Jefferson Lab's machine shop is starting fabrication of a new
cathode-support tube that is slated to receive an anti-field-emission
coating.
Accelerator Systems
- Mechanical design drawings for the shielded beam viewers and
beam-position monitors were signed this week. A contract to the
University of Georgia for a bunch-length monitor based on interferometric
monitoring of optical transmission radiation was finalized and
placed in procurement.
FEL Systems
Wiggler
Following calculations of the field quality by the vendor an approach
was chosen for the end correction which meets the requirements
for steering errors and retains the proposed number of effective
wiggler periods within the proposed physical length. Formal notification
to proceed with the purchase of magnet and pole pieces was given
to the vendor.
Optics
The draft engineering detail drawings for the optical cavity were
internally reviewed for tolerances and manufacturability. Several
minor changes were adopted to improve ability to assemble and
reproduce position.
Overall the drawings appeared good and after correction will be
released for signoff review.
Operations/Commissioning
A strawman schedule for the commissioning and operation was established
for internal review. In addition a proposed approach to commissioning
incorporating the necessary Readiness Reviews for DOE was produced
and posted to the Web (n.b.- due to file management problems a
significant number of the pages which had been previously established
got wiped away. These are in the process of being reconstructed
from the daily archive but there may be some documents unavailable
for a few days.)
Facility
Work continued per or ahead of schedule on the facility. Forms for the second floor pour have been erected. Rebar is being tied in to the east half of the lower floor. Wall forms are being assembled around the emergency exit stairwell. Digging on the east end continued to establish the base for the elevator area. Barring unforeseen problems a second concrete pour can proceed next week.
