Minutes of the IR FEL Beam Transport Meeting, July 25, 1996

Meetings are held in Room 84, Trailer City on Thursday at 1:30 P.M.

ATTENDEES: S. Benson, G. Biallas, L. Dillon-Townes, K. Jordan, J. Karn, G. Krafft, R. Legg, C. Murray, M. Wiseman

Decisions/Comments:

There was much discussion of auto steer, ending in a recommendation that its usefulness to the first stages of the machine is doubtful. See new action item.

D. Douglas presented a plan to use six QB quads from the high dispersion sections of the CEBA for the quads surrounding the Wiggler. He also recommended QJs be used in the positions at the entrance and exit of the arcs. (Editor's note: There are 7 QIs on the shelf in Magnetic Measurement, 4 are meant for the Injection Line. The remaining 3 can be used for the above need.

Action Items:

L. Dillon-Townes/C. Murray/B. Yunn - Maintain latest layout/ define the vacuum tube at all discontinuities, refine impedance analyses and write the Tech. Note. Definition of discontinuities half finished and the list is about complete.

G. Biallas - Get the BT contracts signed. Contracts needed to be changed to new DIMAD configuration. No action.

A. Guerra - Start definition of a girder for the wiggler, diagnostics and quad telescopes that maintains position of the elements within 50 µm (0.002 in.) during change-out of the wiggler. No news.

G. Biallas/L. Harwood - Provide a good value for field enhancement factor for the style of magnets we are anticipating. Verify the K value of 0.45 that D. Douglas uses in his optics calculations. The Prototype dipole should be in by Aug. 5.

G. Biallas - Examine the categories on the Web and propose alterations. Some progress on the Injector Test Stand, web Titles. Given to Donna for posting.

J. Karn - Test a Prototype Sparse Lamination Quad. Quad is o be tested tomorrow.

M. Wiseman - Thermal analysis of the 45 MeV Dump for 30 kW & beam scraper analysis for 45, 79 and 200 MeV. No news.

R. Legg - Check D. Douglas' numbers on the new DIMAD. Started

C. Bohn - Determine the position of the beam scrapers by September 18.

New Action Items for the Vacuum Meeting:

Summary of Minutes from July 24, 1996 Vacuum Meeting

Dillon-Townes/Murray: Provided four elements geometry -- flanges and insertable dump-- to Yunn for impedance study. Bellows, beam scraper, and electrostatic precipitator are next to be defined.

D. Douglas: DIMAD data for the elements for the injector line to through Injector Dump Beam line Chamber was provided by Dave. The beam line elements in the dump line remains to be nailed down -- DIMAD to be generated.

Dillon-Townes: Developed a first cut at a schedule to have an internal vacuum review. Will have J. Parkinson, C. Bohn and other participants review for completeness and viability before publishing.

Dillon-Townes/Murray/Parkinson: Defined zones on the machine to start modular layouts and designs.

Dillon-Townes/Murray: Investigate and define bellows design (shielded and unshielded). No action.

New Action Items from the Diagnostics/Commissioning Meeting:

C. Bohn - revisit the decision to install auto-steer.

D. Douglas - Determine the diagnostics needed in the Injection Line.

Completed Action Items:

R. Legg - Determine what is the best method of bending pulsed beam into the dump during cryomodule phasing. L. Harwood suggests treating the cavities in pairs an back phasing the second cavity to balance the first. The phasing would be complete by flipping the phase on the back phased cavity by 180°, a relatively accurate adjustment. Complete.

Reports for July 26, 1996

G. Biallas

The commissioning review recommended that the first cryomodule double its power during commissioning. If adopted, this will up the requirements for the straight ahead dump.

The data for the design of the Optical Chicane dipoles was sent to Vinnie at Northrop Grumman for detailing.

The copper requisition for conductor for large dipole strings was sent to Procurement.
