IR Demo Project Weekly Report, March 30 - April 3, 1998

April 3, 1998

FEL Management

Highlights for the week include beam commissioning operations that involved:(1) check-out of the machine protection system, (2) check-out of beam loss monitors, (3) initial check-out of linac diagnostic systems, and (4)the first push to high current operation.

Changes in the operations schedule and staffing of the machine for commissioning efforts were instituted this week to help alleviate stress on the operations staff and improve operational efficiency. Control of operations will move from the FEL control room to the MCC starting on Monday, April 6 to take advantage of the MCC operators when they are available. Secondly, operations will be cut back to the period of Monday morning (8:00 am) until Friday night (12:00 pm) except for a Wednesday first shift maintenance period. (See commissioning activityreport below for details)

We achieved 500 microamps cw into the straight-ahead dump at 18.7 Mhz, corresponding to almost 30 pC per bunch. We also achieved 550 microamps cw into the straight-ahead dump at 9.3 MHz, corresponding to 60 pC per bunch. We need to fine-tune the machine before we can go to 1.1 mA cw at 18.7 Mhz with 60 pC bunches as needed for first light, but we are off to a good start. Details are under FEL Commissioning below.

Installation Activities

The installation of the revised MPS was completed, debugged, and verified this week. The location of some of the BLM's are being adjusted to better protect the machine.

The concrete shield blocks were moved into place outside the vault's roll-up door.
