Management
This week was not a productive week as far as machine commissioning activities were concerned.
Most of the week was devoted to diagnosing a problem with the photogun. By week's end,
circumstances forced us to prepare for replacing the photocathode. This will necessitate a break in
electron beam operations for most of the next two weeks. Nevertheless, we note that the cathode
that will be replaced served us very well during the past 7 weeks of operations. As detailed in our
previous weekly reports, we learned quite a bit about establishing stable, mA level beam from our
first high current operations.
As noted in the commissioning and installation reports that follow, the down time this week and
the projected down time over the next two weeks are being used to complete installation/check-out
tasks and to prepare detailed "first light" procedures based on our commissioning experience to
date.
The first shipments of user equipment for the polymers lab and metals lab were shipped to us this
week. The lead scientists from DuPont, Armco, Virginia Power and Northrop Grumman will be
visiting the FEL Facility next week to begin the process of installing this equipment. Our goal is to
have at least one installation in each of these two labs operational by the middle of June so that the
respective user groups can take advantage of the alignment laser system which is now installed in
the optical transport system and to be positioned for use of FEL light later in the summer.
