Minutes of the IR FEL Beam Transport Meeting, November 14, 1996

Next Meeting: Thursday November 21, in Room 84, Trailer City at 1:30 P.M.

ATTENDEES: G. Biallas, S. Benson, C. Bohn, D. Douglas, E. Feldl, K. Jordan, J. Karn, W. Merz, M. Wiseman

Schedule Comments, Decisions and other Comments:

A meeting on the stands and vacuum flanges last week resulted in substantial agreement on the style of stands for the machine as well as produced the final list of vacuum flanges.

J. Karn will get the core assembly for the prototype sextupole done on the outside with an attempt to get it by Mid December.

M. Wiseman reports that the insertable dumps are designed for 1 kW, enough power that lead brick shielding may be necessary.

The sense of the meeting was that the tentative agreement to shunt the Reverse Bends in the recirculation dipole circuit reached on 11/12/96 should be changed to shunting each of the Pi Bends. The reason is that shunting Pi Bends is preferred because of the sensitivity of the lattice to differences in their integrated field. All reasons were eliminated that precluded such a configuration. D. Douglas calculated the ripple driven beam motion of shunting the reverse bends and found no difference from the case of shunting the Pi Bends. W. Merz reported the 60 V rather than 50 V requirement of the Pi bends had no effect on cost or complexity of shunt redesign. W. Merz also estimates the ripple of the shunts will be at the level that it is difficult to measure - about 1 part in 105 or 106. C. Bohn to convey to the other members of the original committee.

S. Benson reports a probable need to have button BPMs on the end of the optical chicane for position sensing during first light

E. Feldl reports development to button BPMs that require just a simple 1.5 inch stub and 2-3/4 inch vacuum flange built into the vacuum chamber on 4 inch (or less) centers.

Action Items:

G. Biallas - Get the BT contracts signed. Contracts needed to be changed to new DIMAD configuration. No progress.

J. Karn - Make the prototype Trim Quad by Oct. 16. Anticipated on Nov. 21.

L. Dillon-Townes - Respond to recommendations of the Vacuum review. In process.

D. Douglas - With D. Kehne, resolve beam spot sizes at energy-recovery dump. In process.

G. Biallas - Get recalculation dipoles designed by Northrop Grumman's V. Christina per the schedule. Contract for the Reverse Bends and the 108 Degree bends is in process.

J. Karn - Investigate the sensitivity K and integrated magnet length with respect to changes in field clamps.

G. Biallas/K. Jordan - have cable tray layout complete by Oct. 21. Cable tray meeting held and layout progressing. B. Shinault to order tray.

G. Biallas - Publish with W. Merz, the projected voltage and current on all magnets and define the hysteresis cycle. Shunt scheme defined; see above.

G. Biallas - Hold the Design Review on Monday, Nov. 18.

D. Douglas - Re do the lattice with the new K value, take into account the request to obtain a recirculation length of 498.5 cycles in order to allow prototyping of multipass monitoring (stretches the circumference by 1.6 m.) and add 6 inches to the space between cryomodule and recirculation dump dipole.

New Action Items :

S. Benson reports that the cable tray near the optical cavity needs to jog only slightly because the telescope will not be near the ceiling as originally planned. This needs to get to R. Wolfly's layout.

S. Benson reports that the duct in the upper corner of the ceiling on the south wall jogs the optical lines away from their intended position. This needs to get to R. Wolfly's layout.

G. Biallas - Reestablish the basis for gaps on all dipoles.

S. Benson - Investigate the effects on the dumps of the new tune-up mode at 15 micro A, CW proposed by J. Kraft.

D. Kehne - contact Robin Wines to get and evaluate beam spot sizes in the Recirculation Dump.

S. Benson - Evaluate the need for windows through out the machine at the Bruster angle. E. Feldl getting ready to order 20 windows in crystalline quartz. S. Benson notes that Sapphire windows at a 20 % greater price are far preferable to fused quarts windows.

E. Feldl - Get the windows on order for the 180 Degree Bends

K. Jordan/E. Feldl - Evaluate the use of ports straight ahead at the Optical chicane dipoles to extract straight ahead OTR light and act as a synchrotron light monitor.

C. Murray/M. Wiseman - Define the new positions of lights in the FEL building that will not interfere with cable tray and optical lines.

C. Murray - Transmit to C. Curtis the position of the High Voltage Power Supply for the gun.

L. Dillon-Townes - Provide B. Yunn the configurations of the simplified beam tubes.

L. Dillon-Townes - Order the entire stock of required vacuum hardware (including bolts and gaskets)

M. Wiseman - Order the right quantity of adjustment cartridges now that the stands are defined.

Completed Action Items :

G. Krafft - Determine quantity of insertable dumps. Do they have to be isolated? Three are required. Complete.

E. Feldl - Transmit the results on the linear range of the BPMs from R. Ursic to D. Douglas. Complete.

M. Wiseman - respond to new time lines requested by the schedule. Complete, additional peg point for girders and stand design will be missed.

D. Douglas - Redo the lattice with the new K value of 0.24. Complete.
