MEMORANDUM
To: J. Cook, D. Helms, W. Skinner
cc: Division (M7), FEL Coordination Group
From: F. Dylla
Subject: IR Demo Project Weekly Report, November 24-26,
1997
Date: November 26, 1997
This week's report is being sent mid-week and is abbreviated due
to the Thanksgiving holiday. Commissioning activities have been
proceeding well. Accordingly, commissioning activities are suspended
from the end of owl shift on Wednesday (Nov. 26) until Monday
evening (Dec. 1). Some installation activities with the fit-up
of arc dipole (DQ) magnets will proceed on Friday and Saturday
depending on the availability of manpower from concurrent nuclear
physics activities. Brief updates in the usual categories follow:
Management
F. Dylla met with DOE-BES Program Management (R. Marianelli and
W. Oosterhuis) on Monday Nov. 24 to discuss the internal BES review
of pre-proposals that have been sent to BES in Sept. and Oct.
for use of the IR Demo. A significant number of the pre-proposals
were selected to go forward for preparation of full proposals.
Also discussed at the meeting were potential collaboration topics
between Jefferson Lab and BNL on FEL technology and applications.
Installation Activities
Shielding was added to the recirculation dump so that commissioning
activities can proceed through the cryomodule to this dump. Electrical
connections were completed to the dipole magnets (DU) up and downstream
of the cryomodule.
Vacuum chambers up and downstream to the wiggler chambers were
installed. The viewer assemblies were added to the wiggler chamber.
The optical cavities assemblies were fiducialized and placed in
preliminary positions on their respective optical tables.
Commissioning Activities
Commissioning activities over the last four days focused on tuning
up the injector cryounit to flesh-out an RF calibration problem
and check-out of the injection line diagnostics. All hardware
is now in place to allow beam to progress through the linac cryomodule
to the recirculation dump.
