Minutes of the IR FEL Beam Transport Meeting, October 31, 1996

Next Meeting: Thursday November 7, in Room 84, Trailer City at 1:30 P.M.

ATTENDEES: G. Biallas, C. Bohn, L. Dillon-Townes, D. Douglas, E. Feldl, J. Karn, W. Merz, M. Wiseman

Schedule Comments, Decisions and other Comments:

The Vacuum Review will be today at 3:00

The programmatic review focused our attention on making our peg points. I have now spread them throughout the new schedule. We are not meeting the design dipole and design quadrupole peg points. because of delays in design.

Sextupole design is ready for prototyping.

Decision on girder for injection chicane dipoles is to make out of surplus 1.25 inch plate in a box beam.

C. Murray has given the floor plan to C. Curtis to fulfill the requirement to have information available for the network layout. He will check if it enough.

Extensive discussion of the philosophy of the shunt scheme between D. Douglas and W. Merz decided that while the 180 degree dipoles have stability specification at the 1 part in 10,000 level, the shunts have short term stability at the 1 part in 100,000 level (with long term drift that is easily corrected) Therefore the four knob for three parameters scheme presently in place is not needed.

Action Items:

G. Biallas - Get the BT contracts signed. Contracts needed to be changed to new DIMAD configuration. Due last month, not done.

G. Biallas/L. Harwood - Provide a good value for field enhancement factor for the style of magnets we are anticipating. Field clamp tests indicate a K of 0.24 and a virtual total cut of fringe field. D. Douglas prefers the low K value and achieved a design of the lattice with harmonics within a factor of two of the existing lattice within two hours. He will take a few days to attempt to achieve a better value than the existing lattice. J. Karn will investigate the sensitivity of the field clamps in parallel in case D. Douglas is unsuccessful. Complete.

J. Karn - Make the prototype Trim Quad by Oct. 16. Anticipated on Nov. 14. We will send the sextupole coils to an outside shop.

G. Krafft - Determine quantity of insertable dumps. Do they have to be isolated? In process.

J. Parkinson - Establish how we will clean vacuum chamber pipes. In process.

D. Douglas - With D. Kehne, resolve beam spot sizes at energy-recovery dump. In process.

E. Feldl - Transmit the results on the linear range of the BPMs from R. Ursic to D. Douglas. Obtained but not transmitted.

The magnet Review is coming up on November 15.

New Action Items :

M. Wiseman - respond to new time lines requested by the schedule.

G. Biallas - Get recirculation dipoles designed by Northrop Grumman's V. Christina per the schedule.

D. Douglas - Redo the lattice with the new K value of 0.24.

J. Karn - Investigate the sensitivity K and integrated magnet length with respect to changes in field clamps.

G. Biallas/K. Jordan - have Cable tray layout complete by Oct. 21. Jim Parkinson has appointed B. Schinault to take on coordination, ordering and installation of the cable tray in the FEL Building. The preliminary drawings are being studied. Needs integration with other apparatus in the building.

G. Biallas - Publish with W. Merz, the projected voltage and current on all magnets and define the shunt schemes and hysteresis cycle.

Completed Action Items :

A. Guerra - Start definition of a girder for the wiggler, diagnostics and quad telescopes that maintains position of the elements within 50 µm (0.002 in.) during change-out of the wiggler. Dipoles will be independent of the mirror girders. Bench for wiggler will be an optical table. Complete.

M. Wiseman - Thermal analysis of the 45 MeV Dump for 50 kW & beam scraper analysis for 45, 79 and 200 MeV. Complete.

C. Murray/L. Dillon-Townes - D. Douglas needs room to put a skew quad at the ends of the cryomodule. He will provide geometry to C. Murray. May superpose on the correctors. K. Jordan to be aware that 4 new trim circuits are needed. Complete.

C. Murray/L. Dillon-Townes - Add a current monitor to the end of the Cryomodule. Most likely, this will be a ceramic break. Complete.

Finalize the diagnostics and declare a base line design for area one at the injection point by the end of next week. Complete. Change request review board chaired by G. Krafft will filter any new requests.
