Subject: IRFEL Weekly Report, September 29-October 3, 1997

Date: October 3, 1997

This week's report is abbreviated due to the IR Demo Construction Project Close-Out Review held on Oct. 2-3. The review was attended by the staff and management of the Navy High Energy Laser Office, the DOE Site Office, Adm.(ret.) Ted Parker (representing SURA's Maritime Technical Advisory Committee), and Bill Colson from the Naval Post Graduate School. The review agenda included a summary of the technical, cost, and schedule status of the IR Demo construction project (which was officially completed this week on Sept.30th), and also included discussions of the plans for commissioning and initial operation of the FEL. On Oct. 3, a workshop was held on FEL optics development and implications of coherent synchrotron radiation on FEL design.

Technical highlights for the week include the following:

1. first operation of the photoinjector gun in the new facility on September 29. The gun was operated at the required voltage (350 kV) and its operation officially kicks off the IR Demo Commissioning process.

2. the west arc vacuum chambers and the 180 dipole magnet were installed for fit-up;

3. the second and last reverse bend dipole magnet was shipped;

4. the cooling water loop for the injector dump was put into operation and

5. the Danfysik magnet power supplies were powered through the control system.
