Minutes of the IR FEL Beam Transport Meeting, September 19, 1996

Next Meeting: Thursday October 3, in Room 84, Trailer City at 1:30 P.M.

ATTENDEES: G. Biallas, L. Dillon-Townes, D. Douglas, J. Karn, G. Krafft, W. Merz, C. Murray, M. Wiseman

Schedule Comments, Decisions and other Comments:

It was noted that in the disassembly of the ITS and reinstallation in the IRFEL, there will be several items that have to maintained clean because it is impossible to clean them once they are dirty.

Injection Chicane Dipoles continue to slip while evaluation and measurement of the Prototype Reverse Bend continues.

G. Biallas - Move the correctors to a more realistic point on the schedule.

G. Biallas - Add prototyping of the trim quadrupole and the sextupole to the schedule.

Action Items:

L. Dillon-Townes/C. Murray/B. Yunn - Maintain latest layout/ schedule the completion of the definition of the vacuum tube at all discontinuities by 8/15/96, refine impedance analyses and write the Tech. Note. Definition of discontinuities is at 95%. L. Dillon-Towns shall get definitions of the scrapers, the wide OTRs and the new proposed 180 degree Bend button BPMs within two weeks.

G. Biallas - Get the BT contracts signed. Contracts needed to be changed to new DIMAD configuration. Due last month, not done.

A. Guerra - Start definition of a girder for the wiggler, diagnostics and quad telescopes that maintains position of the elements within 50 µm (0.002 in.) during change-out of the wiggler. A. Guerra looking at a home made bench. CERN adjuster information obtained through Will Oren and passed to A. Guerra. No action

G. Biallas/L. Harwood - Provide a good value for field enhancement factor for the style of magnets we are anticipating. Verify the K value of 0.45 that D. Douglas uses in his optics calculations. K value from measurement is an unacceptable 0.6. This would require an entire redo of the Lattice. J. Karn is testing a field clamp as a way to bring the K Value down.

M. Wiseman - Thermal analysis of the 45 MeV Dump for 50 kW & beam scraper analysis for 45, 79 and 200 MeV. Additional progress made.

C. Bohn - Check D. Douglas' numbers on the new DIMAD. Best done by J. Van Ziejts. No progress.

C. Bohn - Determine the position of the beam scrapers by September 18. They are about 12 inches long. R. Li ready to present recommendations next Tuesday.

W. Merz/K. Jordan - Define the power supply for use with the Optical Chicane Dipoles. W. Merz suggests that the spare supply for the 9 doglegs and 2 extraction septa would be suitable for the 42 MeV case for the few months of operation while the 66 kW supply is a match for the upgrade case. Stocking the appropriate parts such as a transformer would make the use of that spare less risky. The trade off is buying a 25k$ supply.

New Action Items :

G. Biallas - Get Vacuumschmelze material for prototype Reverse Bend

E. Feldl - Get the procurement package for the Weak Quads to Procurement by the end of September.

D. Douglas - Ask A. Hutton what QB Quads are available with the "New Optics" that are now being introduced.

C. Murray/L. Dillon-Townes - Look into placing a fast valve into the line immediately after the Cryomodule and add it to B. Yunn's List.

L. Dillon Townes - Submit the paperwork for a change order to add the spare fast valve to the Baseline of the IRFEL.

J. Karn - Extract the data on the CEBA sextupoles as a calibration on how good the IRFEL sextupoles have to be.

J. Karn - Make the prototype Trim Quad by Oct. 16.

Completed Action Items :

L. Dillon-Townes/C. Murray - Add the two slits to the injection region. Complete.

D. Douglas - Create an Alignment Specification for the elements. See Tech Notes 96-024 & 031. Complete.
