Items of Discussion

Vacuum bake of the FEL gun commenced this morning and is projected to end Sunday. HV processing will follow. Processing will proceed the same way it did last time, i.e., with the cathode retracted, and with 430 kV as the target voltage. If problems arise, the cathode will be inserted for the remainder of the processing cycle (as had to be done last time). The apertured cesiator will not be installed this down; it will be installed after the summer run.

G. Biallas reported on the status of the apertured cesiator. He is developing an assembly procedure to aid in aligning the cesiator, but he still needs to pass his ideas by the Alignment Group for review. Fabrication of a simple mockup has begun and will be finished this week. The mockup duplicates the thermal behavior of the actual device, and it will be used to validate the temperature and current of the inner tube. L. Phillips' bell jar will be used for all testing. Thermal tests will include measurement of mechanical droop. All of the internal parts of the real cesiator are now fabricated, but their assembly has not yet started. Fixtures for welding are needed, as is a brazed cooling head and the assembly- sequence drawing which is still in preparation. The outer guide is in detailing, and the external support with a thermal clamp to the valve remains to be laid out.

With the loss of D. Bullard during the CEBAF shutdown and the rebuild/preparation of the FEL gun, there has been no progress toward polishing the sample plates for the ion-implantation studies.

T. Siggins remarked that the three spare, pristine (meaning uncoated) ceramics were received from Ian Brown of LBL.

F. Dylla learned of a recipe for enhanced getter speed at his recent AVS workshop, and he will distribute it as part of his trip report.
