Minutes of FEL Gun Committee Meeting
Friday, 12 Mar 99
Recorder: C. Bohn
Next Meeting
- Date: 25 Mar 99 (one week from this Thursday)
- Time: 1500-1600
- Place: FEL Facility Break Room
Agenda for Next Meeting
- Plans for wafer change (Siggins, 10 min)
- Status of focused cesiator (Biallas, 15 min)
- Status of ion implantation (Biallas, Siggins, 10 min)
This Week's Attendees
G. Biallas, C. Bohn, F. Dylla, J. Gubeli, D. Manos, L. Phillips, T.
Siggins, C. Sinclair, L-L. Wu
Discussion
The entire meeting was dedicated to formulating unambiguous plans for
ion-implantation studies. An outline of the result is as follows:
Overall Plan
- Need a strawman table of proposed experiments (L.-L. Wu will draft it).
- Start with 6"-dia plates.
- Decide on "most promising" procedure (MPP) based on results with the 6"
plates.
- Apply MPP to aluminum ball (already on hand); refine it if needed
(post-implantation analysis is first a visual test, then cutting the
ball up for microscopic analysis).
- Apply refined MPP to "actual" SS cathode ball.
- Put SS ball in gun and go!
Large Test Samples
- Available : two 6"-dia plates, unpolished (Don Bullard is polishing
both to 9 mm; due 3/19/99); one Al ball (a model of the cathode ball)
- On order: four more 6"-dia plates (soon to be on order and fabricated
on-site; material: 304L SS -- Dylla agreed to pay for the job)
- Consider later (depending on ion-implantation results): similar DLC
tests; Dylla agreed to pay for DLC; Sinclair will give Biallas specs
and quotes.
Next Meeting with D. Manos and L.-L. Wu will concern development of an
off-line test chamber and preliminary ion- implantation results. It
will occur around 24 Apr 99.
Closed Action Items
- Dylla: Arrange a meeting between FEL Gun Committee members and
William & Mary staff to define the experimental program for ion
implantation and coating electrodes. Status: Held meeting today.
- Biallas: Through G. Neil, arrange for D. Bullard to polish the two
existing 6-inch sample electrodes. Status: Plates are being polished.
- Fugitt: Follow through with Ling-Ling on having her develop a
strawman table of HV experiments on
candidate electrode materials. Status: Discussed at today's meeting.
(Note: Lingling distributed a draft table on 15 Mar 99.)
New Action Items
None.
Old Action Items
- Biallas/Sinclair: Resolve discrepancy in the calculation of
cesium-deposition rate with focused cesiator design. (due 9 Mar 99)
- Biallas: Arrange for fabrication of additional 6-inch sample
electrodes. (due 18 Mar 99)
- Siggins: Polish the spare cathode ball to 1-micron fineness. (due
12 Mar 99)
- Sinclair: Prepare procurement package for DLC-coated samples for
Dylla's signature. Status: Will be passed to Dylla per discussion
above.
- Siggins/Biallas: Specify design of experiment to measure cathode
temperature. (due date TBD)
- Dylla: Ascertain feasibility of low-cost "load lock" for
cathode-processing experiments in the
ARC. Status: No progress due to lack of funding. (due date TBD)
- Siggins: Begin scanning gun data and, with D. Gilchrist's help,
compiling information into an electronic
logbook. Status: Web site was created; progress slowed by recent FEL
gun and commissioning activities.
(due 19 Mar 99)
