Dear Drift Chamber Experts;

Yes, experts - the next commissioning run is June 5 -30, comprising about
60-70 8-hour shifts. For the first two weeks, I'd like to have at least
one drift chamber expert on shift at all times. There are 20 -25 drift
chamber experts from UMass, UPitt, CMU, Richmond, ODU, Saclay and Jlab so
if everyone signs up for 3 - 4 shifts, we can have everything covered.
By the way, you can cover a drift chamber shift and an off-line shift
SIMULTANEOUSLY in my opinion. Please e-mail me your schedule of availability
asap and I'll put a schedule together.

Now - latest news.
Gas system - Steve Christo, George Jacobs and Wayne Major have the hardware
in pretty good shape; 90/10 Ar/CO2 is flowing to all chambers. Mike Vineyard
has given a directory of all EPICS parameters from the gas system to Elliott
Wolin to put into an online database.

ADB/TDC system - all cabled up including chamber signals, common stop and
readout strobe from trigger system, all pulser distribution cables in,
all crates reading out - much credit to Burin Asavapibhop and Steve Barrow
for getting all this done. Dave Tedeschi is here at CEBAF for two weeks
and will help in reading out the raw ROC data and re-BOSifying it.

High Voltage - the first of three hv crates from CAEN was installed and
briefly exercised on one of the chambers yesterday. Much credit to Peter
Bonneau and Amrit Yegneswaran and their crew for a thorough testing and
commissioning job. We are now using the CAEN supplies to re-condition
the chambers.

Broken Wires - extensive testing of chambers was led by Dan Carman and Liming
Qin and one of the ODU undergrads. What they discovered is that 9 of the 18
drift chambers have one or more shorts between sense and field wire hv busses,
i.e. presumably broken wires. The worst cases are sectors 2 and 3 (11 and 1
o'clock). We are beginning to discuss the issue of when and how to repair
these chambers; e.g. this summer or next January.

Offline software and analysis - Richard Thompson has created a standard set
of histograms to be booked and filled by a standard executable which would
be used for a quick look at the integrity of the data. Francois Roudot
has finishied converting Recsis to the new code management system, CVS.
He has almost gotten time-based tracking going.

- some of the news,
Mac
