Dear real photon group member,

I have placed an ASCII copy of the postscript file on my web page
(www.rpi.edu/~klusmm) as well as attaching a copy to this e-mail.

I hope this comes through okay...

Hall B Pair Spectrometer: Commissioning Run Plan

Mike Klusman III

February 4, 1998

Jim Napolitano and I are requesting one-shift of beam time to accomplish checkout of the Pair Spectrometer.

1 Initial Checkout Before Beam

* Check PS scintillators for damage and new light-leaks

* Check HV card stability for PMTs

1. check phototube signals

* Check all connections from PMT bases

1. check signal cables from PMT base to electronics rack (LEVEL 2 on space frame)

* Check signal integrity from electronics rack (LEVEL 2 on space frame) to ADC and

TDC cards

1. check for broken connections at junction box of splitter (LEVEL 2 on space frame)

(a) Use a signal generator 2. check NIM/ECL Converter for broken inputs (LEVEL 1 on space frame) 3. check input connections of ADC splitter (LEVEL 1 on space frame) for broken

cable connections

* Discriminator Threshold should be between 50 and 100 mV (100 mV standard)

* Check Timing of PS for Trigger Supervisor

1. Adjust timing in Delay Generators for TS

* Collect ADC pedestals and TDC offsets (DAQ?)

* Check Target system

* Check dipole magnet

1. LCW checkout 2. Current trip limits properly set

1

2 Plateau of Counters with Beam

* Vary HV to plateau counters

1. -200 to +200 HV range around nominal voltage 2. high voltage steps of 50 V 3. interpret scalers (readout 0.1 Hz) (need Master OR)

3 Calibration

* Look at PS *TASC

* Look at efficiency of PS vs. Tagger

PS Triggers in beam

Map *

B vs. Trigger Rate of PS Find optimal field setting to operate PS Data selection of PS

L = left side (L1 - L4) OR'd R = right side (R1 - R4) OR'd

Full OR of PS (L *R) *1% of events PS (L *R) *Tagger (Master-OR and/or sections of focal plane) PS (L *R) *Tagger (Master-OR and/or sections of focal plane)

4 Time Allotment Estimation 4.1 Pre-beam checkout

Visual inspection of PS 15-30 minutes PMT signal checkout 30-60 minutes PMT signal cable checkout 60-90 minutes Check Hardware 30-60 minutes Collect Pedestals Check Timing 30-90 minutes & Check Target

Magnet Checkout *90 minutes

Estimate Time with safety factor (1.5) = 600 minutes (10 hours)

2

4.2 Plateau Curves

DAQ scaler readout *90 minutes Analysis of Plateaus 15-30 minutes

Estimated Time with safety factor (1.5) = 240 minutes (4 hours)

4.3 Calibration

PS trigger surveys *90 minutes PS vs.*

B map *60 minutes

Estimated Time with safety factor (1.5) = *240 minutes (4 hours) 5 Recommendations

* Pre-beam checkout can be accomplished before the Mid-March commissioning sched

ule. There exists a spare scintillator in case of problems. 300ns LEMO cables should be set aside. There may be a need to replace some cables from electronics between space frame levels.

* I estimate 1/2 shift for plateauing the PS counters.

* I estimate 1/2 shift for efficiency studies.
