Subject: For Your Information: Critical changes to nameservers.

philpott@cebaf4.cebaf.gov,

This is a automated mailing. You have received this as you are
the zone contact for 57.129.in-addr.arpa.

This notice is being sent once per zone. Can you please forward
this to the administrators of the child zones for the zones you
administer, if any.

The next minor release of BIND nameserver will be enforcing
RFC952 (as modified by RFC1123) hostname conformance as part of
its SECURITY measures. Following its release hostnames that
fail to conform to these rules will be unreachable from sites
running these servers.

Hostnames (A records) are restricted to the following characters only.

"A" - "Z", "a" - "z", "0" - "9", "." and "-"

The following characters are specifically excluded "_" and "/".

We are letting you know in advance so as to minimise the
problems this will cause.

If the specified zone has any records that don't meet the above
criteria, then any attempts for resolution of the name will
fail. If your zone is pristine, then consider this a heads
up notice when other zones start failing to resolve names.

For a full description of what is allowed in a hostname please
read RFC952 and RFC1123.

Space Frame Workers,

clasxt33, the XTerm on Deck 1 of the Space Frame, is now in good
working condition. Sorry for the delay; Dave says that these things
have been giving us all kinds of trouble. I personally favor just using
PC's with big screens. ;)

Thanks,

I've just moved the cvs repository from
/usr/site2/epics_physics/cvsroots on cebafh to /apps/epics/cvs on
clas10. We are now using the clas10 version as our authoritative
repository. Please make all future commits there.

There is one pitfall that I've found in making this move. If you have
files in your private areas that were checked out from the old
repository, you will have problems making commits of new versions from
those directories to the new repository. How do you know where your
working copies came from? Look in any of the CVS directories in your
tree at the file CVS/Repository. It contains the file name of the
repository used in the checkout. If you have this problem (a) you will
know it because many cvs commands, including commit, will not work and
(b) let me know and I can help you with the transfer. Or if you wanna
do-it-yourself:

One work-around is to checkout another copy of the module in question
from the new repository to a scratch area. Then copy your changes into
this working copy and then commit the changes from there back into the
new repository.

People,

I am going to rebuild the development area starting around now. It
will be unavailable for about 10 minutes.

This is to add new versions of init scripts for clasgas and classc12.

Version 1

An EPICS Directory Structure for Hall B

This note describes the directory structure that we will use to store
and manage the EPICS files for Hall B. The system has the following
features:

o CVS control of all locally developed sources.

o Independence among developers by facilitating private versions of
the software.
- Implemented via CVS.
- Acceptable build times, even for private copies of the entire
system.

o Complete status and revision history of software.
- Again via CVS.
- For the production and development versions of the tree and for
private versions.

o Ability to reconstruct previous versions of the tree.
- By date.
- By CVS tag.

o Well-defined integration testing environment.
- The development version, by definition.
- Easy switch from testing to production.

o Version control of IOC initialization scripts.

Outline of the Tree
-------------------

/apps/epics # mother of all directories
hallB # specific release of EPICS (R3.12.0beta8)
base # EPICS base
ascii # ascii files
dev # device support
rec # record support
... # etc.
config # EPICS config files
extensions # EPICS extensions
devel # development version of Hall B stuff
app # our applications
hvca # high voltage control
Target_Wheel # solid target wheel
... # etc.
ioc # our ioc scripts
clasgas # scripts for clasgas
classc8 # scripts for classc8
... # etc.
baseB # Hall B additions/modifications to base
ascii # ascii files
dev # device support
rec # record support
... # etc.
prod # production version of Hall B stuff
app # app, like above for devel
ioc # ioc, ditto
baseB # baseB, same
local_files # scripts used to build this stuff
R3.12.2patch1 # another generic version of EPICS
base # ya
config # da
extensions # ya
devel # da
prod # ya
local_files # da
...

Guided Tour of the Directories
------------------------------

The tree resides on a local disk on clas10, a HP 735 (formerly known
as cebafa).

/apps/epics

The top level directory. All files are under this directory.

epics/hallB (actually R3.12.0beta8)
/R3.12.2patch1
/R3.13.0
...

These directories each contain a specific release of the EPICS
software. Since the details of files depend in general on the release
of EPICS being used, all files built on that release are also kept in
these directories.

hallB/base/ascii
/dev
/rec
...
/config
/extensions

These are the standard EPICS directories, shown here for the release
we have been using for the past year (a. k. a. R3.12.0beta8). These
are not under CVS control. The releases are huge and branches of the
tree are highly intertwined. They are not amenable to a complete
checkout by the developer (too long/big to build) or partial checkout
(because of the lack of independence of the parts).

hallB/devel
/prod

These are two versions of the tree that contains all of the files
needed to run Hall B EPICS applications over and above the contents of
the plain EPICS release. The development area will be updated fairly
often and will reflect the latest revisions of all files in the CVS
repository at the time of update. The production area has all of its
modules checked out using tags, either explicit tags (cvs checkout -r)
or date tags (cvs checkout -D), and so will not in general reflect the
latest checked-in revisions. Using tagged revisions allows direct
control and reproducibility of the production tree. The production
version will change less often than the development version and will
be the one used in running the Hall. Both areas are built by executing
a script (see local_files below) which provides a document of the
checkout and build procedure and, in the case of the production
version, of the tags used in the checkouts.

devel/app/hvca
/Target_Wheel
...
or
prod/app/hvca
/Target_Wheel
...

The app/ directory contains each of the individual applications used
in the Hall, each in separate directories. In most cases the point of
CVS control (cvs module name) is the directory under app/. So for
example, the Target_Wheel application is installed in the development
tree with the commands

cd $EPICS/devel/app
cvs checkout Target_Wheel
cd Target_Wheel/src
make

and so on.

devel/ioc/clasgas
/classc8
...
or
prod/ioc/clasgas
/classc8
...

Each directory in the ioc area contains the files needed to initialize
a particular IOC. These are mostly "startup" and/or "load"
scripts. The development and production versions are kept separately
since details of the script often depend on the particular revisions
of code and data files used by the IOC. All ioc directories are put
in a single cvs module: ioc.

devel/baseB
or
prod/baseB

This is the head of a directory tree that contains all of the
Hall-B-specific software that add to or replace files in the plain
EPICS base. This structure has been described in more detail in a
previous note. Its directory structure is the same as that of the
standard base, but the tree only contains local versions, and
therefore is not a complete version of the base by itself. Its smaller
size allows individual developers to check it out and build it
themselves, making independent development easier.

hallB/local_files

The files in this directory are of two types: (1) the build scripts
used to make the development and production trees and (2) versions of
a few files from base, config and extensions need to build the plain
EPICS release locally, for example config/CONFIG_SITE which supplies
site-specific settings.

Status of the System
--------------------

At present I plan to administer the development and production trees
myself. The only route for a new revision into the trees is to check
it into the CVS repository. These check-ins can of course be done by
any developer. I will try to notify the group of rebuilds via the
email list. On the other hand, in each case (at least in principle) a
complete record of what I do exists in the build scripts in the
local_files/ directory. Doing a build really means executing a single
script; the action itself is not complicated (once you have the right
script ;-) ).

I am working on a script to build a complete private version of the
EPICS environment for an individual, in a place of his/her
choice. Many of you are already checking out the modules you need and
know that it is not strictly necessary to have the entire environment
built to perform a given task.

Hope this helps.

Folks,

clas10 crashed at about 2 this morning. The file system was full due
to the resulting core file. I deleted some old core dumps in
/tmp/syscore to free up space on the / file system. The deletions took
place at about 10 this morning.

CONTROLLING PMT HIGH VOLTAGES

We are now using one and only one computer, namely clas10 to control
PMT HV's. There are two separate gui's to run, one for beam and tagger
channels (bmta) and one for the Cerenkov, time-of-flight, and forward
calorimenter (ccecsc).

Some useful information:
------------------------

HV will not be applied to a channel unless the appropriate mainframe
is "on" and the channel is "enabled" and the demand voltage has been
set to a non-zero value.

Voltages are in volts, currents are in micro-amperes and time is in
seconds. E. g., ramp up rates are in V/s.

A "mainframe" is a physical crate of cards that holds up to 16 HV cards
numbered 0-15.

A "HV card" controls 12 channels, numbered 0-11.

A "group" is a collection of HV channels that can be enabled and
disabled with a single command. Each group has an index which is
defined in the file $APP/hvca/db/ccecsc.grp or bmta.grp.

There is are HV files which contain all HV control parameters and geographic
information: $APP/hvca/db/ecsc.dat and bmta.dat. The columns in this
file are:

channel label
group id
allow/disallow operator HV turn on: 1 for allow, 0 for disallow (not coded)
IOC identifier
mainframe arcnet address
slot number
sub-module number: 02 for all PMT HV channels (as opposed to chamber HV)
channel number
demand voltage: a signed number
measured voltage dead zone: a significant change in voltage
measured current dead zone: a significant change in current
ramp up rate: unsigned
ramp down rate: unsigned
trip current: signed, should match sign of demand voltage
software "maximum": in volts (not yet implemented)

To start the gui:
-----------------

Log into clas10 as clasrun, using the standard password.

Set the DISPLAY environment variable:

setenv DISPLAY your_x_terminal_name:0.0

Give the command:

hvfc

where "fc" is for forward carriage or

hvbmta

To exit the program:
--------------------

De-iconify the "medm" icon.

Open the menu "File".

Click on "Exit".

Description of Screens:
-----------------------

Auxiliary screens are accessed by pushing the overlapping-squares-icon
buttons and choosing from the menu that appears. In a lot of cases the
menus have only one choice. Yes, this is redundant. It is a feature of
medm as far as we know.

To change a value place the cursor in the appropriate "set" box, type
in the desired value and hit <return>. You must hit <return> to enter
the value.

Main Screen
-----------

HV/On and HV/Off buttons: turn mainframe on and off. When off the
"LED" is white, when on it is green.

Group Enable/Disable: Enables (green) or disables (red) an entire
group. (Do not use, see "Trouble Shooting" below).

Save: Will save current values of the set and measured voltages and the
measured current. (Do not use, see "Trouble Shooting" below).

Restore: Will initialize all values using those contained in the HV
file. (Do not use, see "Trouble Shooting" below).

Alarms: We are working on this.

Links to Voltage/Current: Calls up screens that display measured and
demand voltages and measured currents. The labels are those of the
first channel displayed on a page. Each page contains up to 24
channels.

Voltage/Current Screen
----------------------

Enable/Disable: Enables (green) or disables (red) an individual
channel. If a channel is enabled, a green "LED" turns on.

Set Voltage: field for inputing a new demand voltage. Must be a signed
number.

Voltage/Current: Same as "Links to Voltage/Current" on main screen.

Control Parameters: Calls up screens of the control parameters not
shown on the Voltage/Current screen.

Trouble Shooting
----------------

Rebooting an IOC
----------------

The system is more robust than it was last December, but problems may
still exist. One symptom you might see is that certain fields that
should update their values do not. The classic example is the measured
voltage not changing, even after the demand voltage is changed and the
channel has indeed gone to the new value.

If the system seems to be corrupted and you are getting the behavior
mentioned above, you can often recover by rebooting the VME
controller, which in EPICS is called an IOC (Input/Output
Controller). Here's the drill (directions for beam/tagger in
parentheses):

For the calorimeter/time-of-flight/Cerenkov (beam/tagger):

Exit medm. On the small "medm" screen select "File" and then "Exit".

log into classc8 (classc12) as clasrun

telnet classc8 (telnet clasgas)
VxWorks login: clasrun
Password: the-usual-password

Reboot the IOC. There will be a delay after you issue the following
command and your carriage return will not be echoed.

reboot

Log back into the IOC. See above.

Load the software. The first character of the command is the less-than
sign, "<".

< classc8.load (< load)

The loading will take a couple of minutes. You should look for a
message saying that the initialization of the cache is complete, one
message for each mainframe.

Start medm again.

People,

I have set up a command that will start our beam scaler gui on a
screen in the MCC. After logging in as clasrun on clas10, give the
command:

scaler_mcc

and a medm process will start up in the background with its x-display
being sent to opx05.cebaf.gov.

To tell if the gui is already running, say

ps -fe | grep medm

This will show you all versions of medm running on clas10. One of them
should refer to a file with "scaler" in the name. This command will
not give a reference to any scaler gui running in our counting room,
as long as that scaler gui was launched from Yannick's gui launcher.

Slow Controllers,

We just rebooted clas10. It's up now.

The reboot was done to increase the allowed number of user processes
from 50 to 256. This number is exclusive of processes owned by
root. We were routinely breaching the limit of 50 during the last few
days.

Thanks to Mike J. for finding and implementing the solution.

Folks,

We are taking James (JA) Muguira out to lunch today (Friday). JA had
his last day a couple of days ago, got a free lunch out of some of us,
and is coming back for more. He is going off to a job in Washington,
DC.

If you are interested, meet in my office (B120, CEBAF Center) at
noon. Also please email me back if you are planning to show up.

People,

I have a suspicion that the actual number of allowed processes is
still too small to be comfortable. As a temporary fix, I would like
for us to voluntarily limit the number of processes running at one
time. Please do not use clas10 to host x-sessions or to run
non-critical applications. When we get this fixed, we can all jump
back into the pool. I'll let you know.

Hello,

Mark Ito suggested this would be of broader interest, so I
am forwarding it to the group.

Basically Hall B is now monitoring some diagnostic signals from
the high sensitivity smoke detector network in Hall B, using
EPICS. There are 'chart recorder' outputs from the system which
can be accessed without disturbing its normal functioning.
This allows us to look for problems in parallel with the
certified building fire alarm system. If we can tolerate a false
alarm every now and then, we can set our alarm levels much lower
than the building systems and so potentially get much earlier
warning of incipient fires.

Since the message below, I put together a rudimentary alarm
handler which watches the VESDA system and the high voltage
systems. We have had about one week's operating experience with
this and it appears to be working well. One thing we observe
is VESDA trips during beam tuning into the hall; these are
very brief spikes in the output, sometimes firing 3 detectors
at once, obviously due to some electronic (not smoke) effect.
We have also seen alarms due to legitimate failures in the
high voltage systems. So everything appears to be working,
although there are details we don't quite understand.

CREDITS:
I was able to get the VESDA ADC's up and working in a week
or so, starting from almost zero EPICS knowledge, only because
of lots of patient help from Mike Vineyard on how to set up the
XYCOM 560's and read them out. Mike also showed me how to set up
the alarm handler. I benefitted from the work of Sasha Phillips
who already had automatically produced alarm handler configuration
files for the high voltage systems; I just tuned them a bit and
concatenated them into one big file for the run. Mark Ito helped
me at every point, in particular in fitting my code into the
production version of the Hall B slow controls software.

Folks,

I've written a script that will build, in the directory of your
choice, a complete copy of the Hall B EPICS stuff. The command is

$EPICS/local_files/build_private

The script prompts you for the location of the build. If you want your
directories to appear as

/home/me/epics/app
/home/me/epics/baseB
/home/me/epics/ioc

Then the response to the prompt

Enter the name of the directory in which the build should take place.
directory name (use an explicit pathname):

should be

/home/me/epics

This area must _not_ contain pre-existing copies of the directories
app, baseB or ioc. If any one of them is found there, then the script
will exit. This is done to prevent accidentally overwriting a previous
checkout.

After getting the build area, the script asks about whether or not
certain assumptions it will make are OK with you. In particular it
reports on the build area, the value of $EPICS and the value of
$BASEB. If any of these assumptions are unacceptable to you, the
script will exit and you can change them before invoking the script
again.

The build takes about 5 minutes. The built files presently use 21 MB
of disk space.

When the build is done, you can use your new area by (a) doing the
appropriate setup_epics and (b) pointing the IOC of your choice to the
private area.

(a)

setenv BASEB /home/me/epics/baseB
setup_epics

(b)

In the .cshrc of clasrun on clas10

setenv IOC_root_myioc /home/me/epics

and then rebooting the IOC.

What follows is an example session invoking build_private.

clas10:marki> unsetenv EPICS BASEB IOC APP
clas10:marki> setenv BASEB /home/marki/epics/baseB
clas10:marki> setup_epics
$EPICS not defined: use default
$EPICS is /apps/epics/hallB
$BASEB already defined: using existing definition of BASEB

People,

Unless there are objections, I plan to delete the following
directories on /usr/site2.

This will happen no earlier than Wednesday, March 12.

I don't think any of us are using any of these, with one exception
noted below.

/usr/site2/epics_physics/hallb/R3.12.2patch1
/usr/site2/epics_physics/hallb/baseB
/usr/site2/epics_physics/hallb/hallB
/usr/site2/epics_physics/hallb/install
/usr/site2/epics_physics/hallb/setup

The exception (as far as current use is concerned) is
R3.12.2patch1. We are now using the sequencer from this area. I have
copied this directory to /apps/epics on clas10 so we can use it from
there. The directory on /usr/site2 will be deleted, just like the
others.

BROOKHAVEN NATIONAL LABORATORY
ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT OF DIRECTOR

UPTON, NY - March 7, 1997 - Brookhaven National Laboratory today announced
that Dr. Nicholas P. Samios, the facility's Director since 1982, will
retire from his post effective April 30, 1997, to return to a research
position at the Laboratory.
In a letter to all Laboratory employees, after citing a long series
of notable accomplishments during Dr. Samios' tenure as Director, Dr.
Robert E. Hughes, President of Associated Universities, Inc., observed,
"These and many other achievements attest to the vision and strength that
Dr. Samios brought to his role in leading the Laboratory into world-class
science and productive interactions with the national and international
scientific communities."
Hughes added, "As President of AUI, I have gained a high respect
and personal regard for Nick Samios and wish him well as he continues his
scientific career at the Laboratory as AUI Distinguished Scientist."
In presenting the AUI Board with his decision, Samios wrote, "As
you know from discussions over the past year, I have privately indicated my
intention to step down as Director of Brookhaven National Laboratory at the
fifteenth anniversary of my appointment. I have delayed the formal
announcement so as not to cause any interference with the search for a new
AUI President. As that search is now completed, I am formally announcing
that I will step down as Director on April 30, 1997, and return to
full-time research at the Laboratory."
Among the many highlights of Dr. Samios' tenure as Director is his
success in initiating and guiding the development of the Relativistic Heavy
Ion Collider (RHIC). Expected to be the world's premier facility for
nuclear physics research when completed in 1999, RHIC will recreate
conditions that existed in the universe at the earliest moments of its
creation, immediately after the "big bang."
The Brookhaven Center for Imaging and Neurosciences is another of
the landmark developments at Brookhaven overseen by Dr. Samios. In 1996,
the Lab dedicated a new high-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
facility to go along with the existing positron emission tomography (PET)
and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) facilities that make
up the Center. Through the Center, Laboratory researchers can better study
the relationship between mental and physical processes within the brain.
Prior to being named Director in 1982, Samios held a variety of
research and administrative positions within the Laboratory. Since joining
the Laboratory's Physics Department in 1959, his experience includes
serving as physics group leader, Chairman of the Physics Department and
Deputy Director for High Energy and Nuclear Physics.
Dr. Samios is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a
Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has been awarded
the E.O. Lawrence Memorial Award, the American Physical Society's Panofsky
Prize and the New York Academy of Sciences' Award in Physical and
Mathematical Sciences.
Founded in 1947, Brookhaven National Laboratory carries out basic
and applied research in physical, biomedical and environmental sciences and
in selected energy technologies. Associated Universities, Inc., a
nonprofit research management organization, operates the Laboratory under
contract with the U.S. Department of Energy.

Folks,

Our link to /usr/site2/epics_physics changed last night as announced
previously by the Computer Center. What follows are excerpts from an
email exchange I had this morning with Sanday Philpott of the Computer
Center. This may explain problems you are encountering today.

Bottom line: we need to change our references from
"/usr/site2/epics_physics" to "/site/epics".

Note that I have already changed setup_epics to set up a revised PATH
variable.

-- Mark

From marki@cebaf.gov Fri Mar 14 10:32:28 1997

To Whom It May Concern,

The recent change of /usr/site2/epics_physics to /apps/epics has had
the effect of removing all of the software in these directories from
clas10, the EPICS machine for Hall B. [Not strictly true, see below.]

We actually run almost all of our system from a local disk on clas10,
from the directory /apps/epics. We have had the old /usr/site2 NFS
mounted and still depend on it for a few files. We are in the process
of trying to eliminate this dependency completely, but as most of you
know, that is not done overnight.

The effect is that if you are logged in on clas10, the new link
"/usr/site2/epics_physics" points to our local area on clas10 and not
the formerly-known-as-site2 stuff. So we have no window to these files
at present on clas10. We need to fix this somehow.

-- Mark

From philpott@cebaf.gov Fri Mar 14 10:50:13 1997

Hi Mark,

The new /apps/epics location for EPICS in CUE is really a pointer to
/site/epics. The /apps/epics name keeps the CUE requirement that all
software is available in /apps; the real location being /site/epics
allows both HPs and SUNs to see the same Epics tree. /apps is platform-
specific; /site is platform-independent.

So on CLAS10, your local software is /apps/epics, but you
can still see the central copy in /site/epics.

Sandy

From marki@cebaf.gov Fri Mar 14 10:59:04 1997

Sandy,

The effect on us then is that the change is not transparent. We need
to update our references to /usr/site2/epics_physics to
/site/epics. But we can do that. I, for one, am happy with this
configuration.

-- Mark

From philpott@cebaf.gov Fri Mar 14 11:12:56 1997

Another note -- the CUE standards says that your local copy is in /apps/epics,
but you can always reach the central copy in /net/fs1/apps/epics.
I should've told you that, then told you the "shortcut" using /site/epics.

Folks,

We have a new account on clas10; the username is epicsb . I will try
to do most of the system work on our epics stuff from this
account. That way when I am working on a private version, the tree
will look the same to me as other users and I'll be able to spot
protection problems more quickly. Also this will result in most files
being owned by epicsb rather than marki. So others can log in to fix
protection problems and the like. I am _not_ looking to have all files
owned by epicsb, it will most likely end up that way though.

If you anticipate needing the password to this account, get in touch
with me.

Hello EPICS community,

Recently, I had to address a number of similar questions individually.
So, I included a section titled "Access to EPICS Software Distribution"
to the EPICS Software Distribution WWW page.

Whenever you recommend EPICS software to somebody else, please do not
forget to give them the URL of the distribution page. Anwering questions
individually tends to be difficult for me!

In this section, you may checkout access procedure, responsibilities,
tech-talk subcription info etc. Also, various APS FTP sites should not
be used anymore. Our system administrator says that WWW file system
download is working efficiently and could not detect any problems. If
you have problems with APS WWW server, please let me know again.

EPICS Software Distribution URL is:

http://www.aps.anl.gov/xfd/WWW/xfd/SoftDist/Welcome.html

Please forward this message to anybody who might not be subscribing to
tech-talk.

Thanks.

Folks,

I've added a few lines to the document
/apps/epics/setup/setup_epics.txt on clas10 to describe what to do if
you do not use /bin/tcsh as your default shell. Basically, you have to
dispense with the command line argument features of the script.

I just deleted these. I kept around
/usr/site2/epics_physics/hallb/R3.12.2patch1/bin/... because I found
one reference to it in the classc3 startup scripts. (Yannick: can we
get rid of this now?).

I just received the license codes for Capfast (the permenant ones) and =
have installed them in the system. According to the responses I =
received in the past two weeks regarding the nodes to which they should =
be assigned, I obtained codes for the following nodes (I sound like Dr. =
Seuss) -

Dev01-dev04
Alicia1, sally1
Garter, devhla1
Cebafh, clas10

I also requested a license for devsrv to allow Johnnie to continue his =
testing / evaluation. I also obtained a node-Unlocked file good through =
the end of this month in case we run into any difficulties. Please =
insure that xschedit, xsymed, xscheditm, xsymedm,. And edif2sr all work =
on the machines listed above before the end of the month.

Thanks, and I apologize for the capfast outage this morning.

People,

I have copies of the tranparencies from the Slow Controls Working
Group meeting held during the last collaboration meeting. As you
recall the agenda was as follows:

1:30 Yannick Patois a) Overview of Beamline Hardware
b) EPICS Applications for the Beamline

2:00 Sasha Philips PMT High Voltage Control for CLAS

2:15 Mike Vineyard CLAS the the EPICS Archiver

2:30 Elliott Wolin Alarms and Monitors: Coordination with CODA

If you would like to receive a copy of some or all of the
transparencies, send me email.

Dave Abbot tells me:

There is an internal clock on the mvme 162 (167 also?) that will cause
a reboot of the board, after a fixed amount of time. There is also a
watchdog process that resets this clock periodically. If the watchdog
process dies or hangs up, then nothing is there to prevent the board
reboot. Turns out that long scripts and/or downloads deny cycles to
the watchdog process, initiating a board reboot.

This explains why our download of large HV databases kept crashing the
IOC. I have been breaking the databases into smaller pieces to avoid
this problem.

Do any of you know the story about the mysterious symbol needed for
some IOC's called fixunssfsi? In the load script for clasgas, it
starts with the line:

___fixunssfsi = 0x800000

I think someone explained this to me once, but I don't remember the
answer.

Folks,

I have changed the Hall B EPICS setup script. The only change is in
how one sets up a private version of the Hall B tree.

Before, you did a

setenv BASEB your_baseB_directory
source /apps/epics/setup/setup_epics

Now you do a

setenv EPICSB your_root
source /apps/epics/setup/setup_epics

so the name and location of the "setup_epics" script has not
changed. BASEB is now defined by the script. You should not define it
yourself unless you understand what you are doing. It will be defined
as

BASEB = $your_root/baseB

and in a symmetric fashion you will get

APP = $your_root/app
IOC = $your_root/ioc

In essence the definition of a private version keys off the directory
that contains app, baseB and ioc, rather than off the baseB directory
itself.

Note that the old commands, done without any definition of EPICSB,

# setup production version, depend on the default:

source /apps/epics/setup/setup_epics

# setup production version explicitly:

source /apps/epics/setup/setup_epics prod

# setup development version:

source /apps/epics/setup/setup_epics devel

# setup production version using a different version of the main EPICS
# directories (R3.12.2patch1):

source /apps/epics/setup/setup_epics prod R3.12.2patch1

do the same thing that they always have. This change only affects how
private versions are setup. Note also that the IOC_root_xxx
environment variables are unaffected by this change.

The reason for the change is to rationalize some of the build scripts.
The use of baseB as the key directory dated from a time when only
baseB existed. The new scheme is much more natural now that we are in
the practice of checking out app and ioc along with baseB. It leads to
a simplification of the scripts and shorter environment-variable
names.

I have retained the old setup script as "setup_epics_baseB_keyed" in
/apps/epics/setup. Either script will work in our present
configuration.

The solution to the problem was to remove lines that set the
environment variables TK_LIBRARY and TCL_LIBRARY in the .cshrc file of
the clasrun account. I don't know why those definitions were in there
in the first place.

This symbol defined an undefined symbol in object modules compiled
for 162's without floating point hardware. I don't think the value
is used for anything (at least I could not discover it), and with
it defined, everything seemed to work.

I think this was a bug in the gnu compiler or floating point emulation
libraries, and may have since been fixed. Try removing the line and
seeing if you get the unsatisfied reference error.

control of the calorimeter. I have not rebooted any of the IOC's.

Hello,

The classc8 shell is locked by a telnet from the clasrun account. As
people will need the ioc for HV test this afternoon, I'll reboot the ioc
at 14:00. Talk to Chan Hoon Chung <CHCHUNG@CEBAF.GOV> to found an
arrangement if u need the ioc this afternoon.

frwd_scaler and frwd_target modules.

This one has:

1) StripTool config files
2) Removes HV mainframe 4 by default
3) Fixes HV alarm handler problem (actually done in prod_52)
4) Can launch alarm handler, StripTool and archiver from gui_launch.

There are two new scripts in the directory $APP/dcgas/alh. This directory
has been added to the path you get when you source
/apps/epics/setup/setup_epics. To invoke the scripts, simply type the name
of the script.

1) gas_alarm_set

Uses cau to load alarm limits into the dc gas system IOC, clasgas.

2) gas_alarm_edit

Uses vuepad to edit gas_alarm_set. This is slightly unusual since you will
be editing a file in the production area in most cases. Automatically does
a cvs commit after the file is saved.

Subject: Gas Shed Network

Folks,

I am going to replace the current coax network in the Gas Shed with
twisted pair Thurs morning. This is liable to take a good chunk of
the morning, during which the Gas Shed network will be unavailable.

To refresh your memeories : the current gas shed network was
installed without spare components. A coax hub died some months ago,
and we have been running off one borrowed from the computer center.
I need to return that hub to the computer center and put twisted pair\
hubs in the network so that we always have spares as with our DAQ
networks.

Please forward this to anyone who would be affected by the
down time.

Thanks,

Mike J

Just to keep life interesting, I have made a slight change in the way one
accesses the setup_epics script. The old way was

source /apps/epics/setup/setup_epics

and the new way is

source /apps/epics/scripts/setup_epics

As of this writing, BOTH ways work, which means you don't have to change
anything. The file in /apps/epics/setup/ is just a symbolic link to the
file in /apps/epics/scripts/. I don't have any plans to delete this link
any time soon.

I did this to consolidate the "setup" and the "scripts" directories, so I
would only have one such directory to maintain. setup_epics and its
subsidiary scripts were the only ones in "setup".

There is a new production build, in $EPICS/.prod_57. There are updated
tags for dcgas, analog, general, harp, hvca and ioc.

There is also a new script: $EPICS_SCRIPTS/recover.tcl. Arne and I worked
on a scheme where a set of constants can be downloaded via cau
automatically after the IOC completes its startup.all. That way we can
make small adjustments in parameters without having to remake the
databases, and guarantee that they are downloaded on every reboot.
