Dear members of the EG1 runtime coalition,

It has been some time since anybody send out a message to this
distribution list, so I decided to give you a brief update.
The most important piece of news is that we are now "FIRMLY" on the
TENTATIVE run plan for the second half of 1998 (starting with installation
around July 1 and running until Christmas). But we HAVE to have a
readiness review before Feburary 1, 1998, to keep that slot. I hope
to set something up on January 30th - I'll keep you posted. We will need
input from many of you, e.g. on the status of beam line elements, the
Moeller polarimeter, and of course the polarized target (see below).
To prepare for this review, and the run, I propose to have a meeting of
the full EG1 coalition (=all of us) in connection with the next
CLAS collaboration meeting. Ralph Minehart and I agreed that we will
share Sunday, Jan. 11, 1998 for a combined E1/EG1 meeting. Please
mark your calendars!

A subgroup of us has been meeting regularly to discuss target design
issues and make sure the target is on track. The minutes of these
meetings, as well as several other items of interest, can be found on
our newfangled

Please check it out and send any comments or suggestions for changes
to me. Also, if you have any useful material that you would like
to post or link to from this page, let me know.

One current discussion, which started within the target group but
is important for all of us, concerns the best way to correct our
data for dilution (and beam and target polarization). We have to decide
what material to use for our "Background" target (a 3rd target cell
with identical dimensions as the NH3 and ND3 ones, but filled with
a different target material). Ideally, pure N15 would be a good
choice, but it is technically challenging. Some other Nitrogen
compounds (N3H, e.g.) have been proposed, as well as C12 and CO2
(and even C14). To get up to speed on this discussion, please

embedded scribble) to explain my standpoint on this background target
