The computer center has been asking us to "give up" our
disk attached to clas02 since it is not in the Common Unix
Environment. I have been resisting this since there is no
suitable equivalent arrangement in CUE which allows all of
the flexibility we have now. The issues include whether the
disk gets backed up, whether there is a quota on it, the
speed of the connection to a given computer, and how you
orchestrate access by multiple users.
I have proposed a compromise solution - that the computer
center creates an account called 'egn' (just like in the
good old days of VMS) which has a disk quota equivalent
to our 4 Mbyte disk. Access to the password would be limited,
but most or all of the directories would be accessible only by
the 'clasesc' group, with a provision for a private scratch space
with open access, as we have now. This would then be regularly
backed up; we would not have the rapid access to clas02 but would
have access from all computers on the site. Our literal
disk would probably be absorbed into a disk pool, or remain
on clas02 but not be backed up.
In general the computer center resists having a group
account, since there is no direct accountability for its
usage (you could hack into some high-security site and
noone would know exactly who did it). However, since we
have voiced a number of concerns about our requirements
which are not conveniently accomodated by CUE, they seem
willing to relent in this case.
Please post your comments on this proposed scheme.

Hi Will,
There are some group accounts where they really help the group who's using
it -- this is probably a good example. We do want to relocate the CLAS02
files to the central server, so this sounds like a reasonable solution.
