at Jefferson Lab

</fontfamily><fontfamily><param>Geneva</param>Jefferson Lab is
initiating a pilot program to provide research opportunities for
undergraduate science and engineering students. One goal of this
program is to train undergraduate students for research careers.
Professors from the students' institutions and mentors from Jefferson
lab will supervise the research. For the pilot program, the lab
invites students from institutions that require senior theses in order
to graduate. The undergraduates may or may not have the basic training
in the use of scientific instruments and methods. Seniors with
training can join a program that has the potential for completion
within the expected graduation time. Others may come during summer and
winter breaks with the express intention to work towards research
theses. At the end of their research, the students will have learned
the techniques of research, have written theses and preferably have
orally presented their work.

Students, professors and Jlab mentors select suitable research topics.
While some work can occur during summer, the schedule of the laboratory
may require the student to be present at the laboratory during the
academic year. The students, professors and mentors determine the time
(how much and when) that the students spend on the projects.

The participants make their own arrangements for expenses related to
travel, accommodations, etc.

The student's institution and Jefferson lab must execute a Memorandum
Of Understanding (MOU) regarding intellectual property rights such as
inventions, licenses and royalties.

Because this is a pilot program, the lab limits the opportunity to a
few institutions. When the pilot program becomes successful, the
opportunity will be available to all accredited institutions.
