Tagged linearly-polarized photons from a coherent bremsstrahlung source
will be available for use in experiments at Hall B at Jefferson Laboratory
by mid-1999. To further develop the physics program with polarized photons
at Jefferson Lab energies, this workshop will focus on the current status
and future possibilities of measurements of spin degrees of freedom in
photoproduction and scattering processes at Jefferson Lab energies.
The workshop is divided into two complementary components. The first will
be devoted to the physics program that can be studied with a coherent
bremsstrahlung facility; and the second will cover the instrumentation
aspects of such a facility.
The workshop will be held in parallel with the meeting of the Texas Section
of the American Physical Society (TSAPS). Attendees must register for the
TSAPS (registration fee: $15.00). The deadline for preregistration, submission
of abstracts, and accomodations at the reduced rate is September 18, 1998.
Partial list of speakers:
Keith Baker (Hampton University)
William Briscoe (The George Washington University)
Kalvir Dhuga (The George Washington University)
Michel Guidal (Orsay)
Mahbub Khandaker (Norfolk State University)
Franz Klein (Jefferson Lab)
Winston Roberts (Old Dominion University)
Dave Tedeschi (University of South Carolina)

========== Second Announcement ==========
APS/AAPT/SPS Fall Meeting
Texas Section
UT - El Paso 15-17 Oct 1998
=========================================
We expect this sectional APS meeting will be well attended and
we are pleased to announce that Murray Gell-Mann, Howard Georgi,
and Nathan Isgur will be delivering plenary talks.
General Information:
o The Joint Fall Meeting of the Texas Sections of the American Physical
Society (APS), the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT),
and the Society of Physics Students (SPS) will be hosted by the
University of Texas at El Paso on Oct. 15-17, 1998.
Specific Information for Nuclear and Particle Physicists:
o Special Workshop and Call for Papers. We are also organizing two
"workshop type" Nuclear Physics parallel sessions. For the morning
Workshop I session on Friday Oct. 16., the focus will be on Baryon
Spectroscopy or N* Physics. Nuclear/Particle Physics Workshop II will be
held on the afternoon of Saturday Oct. 17. The subject of this second
session is still open depending upon the topics of the submitted papers.
The speakers for these "workshop" sessions will be allocated 1/2 hour for
their presentations. We are also putting out a call for 10-minute
contributed talks for particle and nuclear physics. These sessions
will be held on the afternoon of the 16th and the morning of the 17th.
o Schedule:
* Thursday 15 Oct.
Registration and Reception
* Friday 16 Oct.
Morning: Plenary Talks, Parallel Sessions, Contributed
Papers, and Nuclear Physics Workshop I on
Baryon Spectroscopy
Afternoon: Parallel Sessions, Contributed Papers, and
Special Workshop on Coherent Bremsstrahlung.
Evening: Banquet
* Saturday 17 Oct.
Morning: Plenary Talks, Parallel Sessions, Contributed
Papers, and Continuation of the Special Work-
shop on Coherent Bremsstrahlung.
Afternoon: Parallel Sessions and Nuclear/Particle Physics
Workshop II
o All sessions of the meeting will be held on the UT - El Paso campus.
Accomodations are being arranged at reduced group rates in local
hotels. Please make your reservations early. The DEADLINE for
preregistration, submission of abstracts, and accomodations at the
reduced rate is SEPT. 18, 1998
o Prizes will be awarded for outstanding papers presented by under-
graduate and graduate students. The award program is supported
by the General Operating Fund of the Texas Section of the APS.

The University of Texas at El Paso is situated directly on the Mexican
border in the El Paso/Ciudad de Juarez area. This is the southwesternmost
part of Texas where Mexico, New Mexico and Texas meet. Here the southern
tip of the Rockies (Franklin Mountains) cleaves El Paso into two halves,
and the Rio Grande forms the boundary between El Paso and Juarez. El Paso
is the 4th most populous city in Texas with nearly three-quarters of a
million people; it sprawls across 248 square miles of high plateau desert
and rambling foothills. And Juarez boasts a population of over half again
as many as are in El Paso. The average temperature for October is 64 F
with a humidity of 34%. El Paso's dry, sunny, warm desert climate has
won our city the appellation SUN CITY.
Our bicultural cities span the border with a combined population of nearly
two million inhabitants. This international mixing of such a high popu-
lation density spreading across a border is unparalleled anywhere else
in the world, making for a fascinating blend of cultures. If you are a
fan of Mexican food, there is no better place in the world to sample it
than in the El Paso/Juarez area. And if you fancy cowboy boots or are in
need of saddle blankets, El Paso has plenty of first-rate shops to choose
from. In the late 1500s the Spanish originally named the area "El Paso
del Rio del Norte" (The Pass Across the River of the North). El Paso has
just recently celebrated its 400th anniversary. The first thanksgiving in
the United States was celebrated on April 30, 1598 by 500 colonists led by
Don Juan de Onate near the present site of the west Texas town of El Paso.
