POST-DOCTORAL POSITION IN
EXPERIMENTAL NUCLEAR PHYSICS

THE GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY

The experimental nuclear physics group at The George Washington
University has an opening for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate
starting January 1998. The experimental group at GWU consists of
four regular faculty, one research faculty, one post-doc and six
graduate students. There is also strong theoretical support in the
Department, including six nuclear theorists. The current position
will involve participation in the group's experiments using tagged
photons in Hall B at TJNAF and the Saskatchewan Accelerator Laboratory.

At SAL, the work includes quasi-free Compton scattering from deuterium
and low-energy photodisintegration of 3H and 3He. At TJNAF, the work
includes pion photoproduction from the proton, photoreactions on 3He and
development of polarized photon beams using coherent bremsstrahlung.
The latter development project is the result of recently approved
funding from DOE and NSF and will also involve the design, fabrication
and testing of a photon polarimeter. It is expected that the successful
candidate will contribute in a major way to these experimental efforts,
and will also be encouraged to help develop future experimental proposals.

Applications are invited from candidates with a Ph.D. in experimental
nuclear physics, preferably with experience in electromagnetic nuclear
physics using photons or electrons. The initial appointment will be for
one year, with the expectation of renewal for two additional one-year
terms, subject to mutual agreement. Applications should include a cover
letter, curriculum vitae, publication list, statement of research experience
and interests, and three letters of reference sent directly to:

Questions about the position are welcome and can be sent by e-mail to
the address listed above. Review of completed applications will begin
on November 1, 1997 and will continue until the position is filled.

GWU is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer.
