FACULTY POSITION
Experimental Nuclear Physics
University of Massachusetts, Amherst
The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Massachusetts,
Amherst invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in
experimental nuclear physics to begin September 1, 1998. The hiring is
anticipated to be at the Assistant Professor level, although an appointment
at a higher level will be considered for an exceptionally qualified senior
person.
The experimental nuclear group consists of three faculty members (Hicks,
Miskimen, Peterson), two post-doctoral research associates, and three
graduate students. The group also has close interaction with high energy
theory at UMass (Donoghue, Golowich, Holstein). The experimental groups
present activities include:
Jefferson Lab: In Hall B the group has approved experiments on
tests of the chiral anomaly, the N->Delta axial form factor, and
multihadron studies on few body systems.
SLAC: Participation in experiment E155X, spin structure of the
nucleon, as well as the ongoing analysis of data from E155.
Bates: Studies of virtual Compton scattering on the proton using
out-of-plane spectrometers. Also the analysis of 12C(e,e'p)
out-of-plane data, and 3He(e,e') elastic magnetic data at high q2
is in progress.
The group is looking for an outstanding individual to initiate a research
program in experimental nuclear physics, especially one focused on Jefferson
Lab. The candidate should be an effective teacher at both the undergraduate
and graduate levels. Applicants should send a curriculum vitae and a brief
description of research and teaching plans, and arrange for three letters of
recommendation to be sent to:
