Minutes of the Hall A Meeting November 18, 1997

General (K. de Jager) - OSHA committee is visiting the lab to review lab safety
issues. Visit of Hall A scheduled for 3:00 PM. Ed Folts
preparing the hall. Anyone with any safety concern can
Contact the OSHA committee directly. There will be a
closeout at 4:00 PM Thursday

- P. Rutt moves on to his new position with the polarized
source group. We wish him well.

- A new library committee has been formed to review and
improve the resources of the central library. Kd is a
member of the committee.

- The library will move to the first floor of the ARC
building
in early '98. All library activities will be
centralized.

Experiment 91026 (D. Prout)
- Continuing data taking of Q^2= 5 and 6 (GeV/c)^2.
- Plan is to come in at lower energy thursday. Optimizing
kinematics in coordination with Hall C runs.

- Hall C is likely to continue running into December
for 6 additional days.

Parity Test (Bill Kahl) Target boiling test was completed yesterday. No
appreciable
boiling upto 95 uA. Should be okay for parity dress
rehearsal.

- Coil pulsing data was taken. Detector rate in the HRS
showed good correlation with beam displacement at the
target
with coil pulsing

Moller Test (Sirish Nanda)
- First half of Moller test run completed successfully at
928 MeV.

- Dipole was operated in administrative mode pending
cable tray installation work.

- Changing Hall A line magnet tune to Moller mode went
smoothly.

- With Moller tune, Hall A ion chamber trip at about 1 uA
CW beam.
possibly bad tune. decided to run with 0.5 uA. Took
Moller data for 2 hours

- The new collimator was installed this morning.

- Next test run scheduled for Thursday, however,
discussing
with accelerator to run Wednesday during development
time.

- The radiation monitor in Hall A counting room had
several
false alarms due to a loose cable. RadCon resolving the
problem.

Controls (James Proffit/Javier Gomez)
- Recent magnet trips for Q3 and Dipole may have been
due to He level fault. No real quenches have occurred.
Cryo group has been notified of level problems.

- Experimenters should record magnet He levels and lead
voltages.

Detectors (Bogdan W.) Working on preliminary design of a "diffusion" box based
aerogel counter. Expects to improve photo-electron yield
from about 7 of the present detector to about 20 with
the new approach.

Cryotarget and 3He pol. Target (Jiang-Ping Chen)
- Cryotarget continues to work well.
- Training sessions for cryo target operation is being
scheduled for the next two days.

- French visitors are on site working on compton
polarimeter
pre-installation preparation. The dipoles for compton
chicane
will arrive in December and will be tested in test lab.
Installation of the mini compton system is in Jan/Feb
'98.

- Compton vacuum system has been preassembled and tested
at Saclay.
The test will be repeated at Jlab after final assembly.

- Polarized 3He meeting was held last Saturday at Jlab:
design work (Gavalya) proceeding well. Laser shielding
design
still to be done.

- Test bench polarization of 68% for 3He was reported.

- Readiness review for the 3He target is scheduled for
Jan, 98

16O Meeting (Meihua Liang)
- All day E890003 meeting last thursday at ODU
- Concern over knowledge of the HRS angle surveys
discussed.
Major source of uncertainties as per Chris are
localization
of survey fiducials on the floor and magnets. Net result
is about 1 mm uncertainty in locating the optic axis of
the HRS.

P. Ulmer comments: We only care about angle of HRS
with respect to the beam. Perhaps surveying w.r.t the
beam position monitors as reference will reduce
uncertainties.

DAQ (Bob Michaels) - Analyzing parity test run.
- Re-wrote some of the fastbus software.

Espace (Ole Hansen) - Compiling ESPACE in the Sun CPU with 2nd level
optimization
improves performance. Third level optimization produces
garbage!

- Took Motif interface out of Espace
- New version of ESPACE ready for distribution.
- One of the main features of the new version of Espace is
full support for Linux (made possible by Jeff Templon).
- Computer center is procuring the KAP pre-processor for
IBM cpu's in order for ESPACE to compile in aix.

Beamline (Arun Saha) - Unlikely Hall C ARC magnets can be taken out and
reinstalled
on time for calibration for the ARC energy measurement.

- Will remove one (possibly two) of the Hall A arc dipoles
for
calibration in January

- Dispersive tune for energy measurement will be tested
before december.

- Talk on OTR by J.C. Denard this friday.

Michael Kuss Reports: Working on espace development

Eugene Chudakov Reports: Participating in shifts of the present experiment.
Getting familiar with data taking.

Javier Gomez reports: - Working on the experiment (E91026)
- Preparing task lists for the Hall

Kees de Jager reports: - Helicity control planning meeting held last Friday.
The random time-stamped method proposed by the parity
group
will be implemented.

Capability to switch to real time "flip-flop" mode will
be
available.
