Minutes of Hall A Group Meeting 26 May 1998
1 Run report: (Gilles Qu=E9m=E9ner)
1.1 LVDT on Electron arm repaired.
1.2 Both arms surveyed and look OK.
1.3 Trigger check is done. There were some=20
problems.
1.4 Hall Closed at 2400 on Thursday (behind=20
schedule)
1.5 First useable beam swing shift Friday
1.5.1 Observed straight throughs
1.5.2 Began spin dance.
1.6 Saturday: GEP data for Q2=3D2.168 done.
1.7 Sunday got 20 hours of data.
1.8 Problems:
1.8.1 Control IOC reboots required.
1.8.2 Replaced target IOC card.
1.8.3 Discriminators swapped in Electron Arm
1.8.4 BCM calibration not possible because of=20
what is believed to be a software problem.=20
Has anyone seen Yves Roblin?
1.8.5 BLM trips limiting current to 80=20
microamps. Want to go higher. Accelerator=20
working to cleanup the beam.
1.9 Taking data now.
1.10 Re BCM calibration problem: Pascal Vernin says=20
Geraud has been informed. Javier will be back=20
at 1700 today.
2 Installation: (Ed Folts)
2.1 Shield House doors completed. Will begin=20
checking people out on their operation on=20
maintenance days next week.
2.2 Finishing Laser lab.

3 Engineering/design: (Paul Brindza)
3.1 Polarized 3He target:
3.1.1 Working on small revisions.
3.1.2 Still some work to do on pivot mount.
3.1.3 Still expect completion at the end of May.
3.2 Septum Magnets:
3.2.1 Preparing outline drawings for BWXT re=20
clearances.
3.2.2 BWXT requesting more 3-D magnetostatic=20
analysis. Paul suggests they get Guido=20
Urciuoli to do it.
3.3 Aerogels: Waiting for feedback from Bogdan.=20
Bogdan says he=92ll have it this afternoon.
3.4 M=F8ller Target: working on ideas for solution to=20
the backlash problem. Should be able to repair=20
it in the July shutdown.
3.5 Re new design projects: About to make=20
transition from working on Polarized 3He to=20
working on septum magnet support. If you have=20
small things, now is the time to get them in=20
the system.
4 M=F8ller Polarimeter and FPP: (Eugene Chudakov)
4.1 M=F8ller Target:=20
4.1.1 Investigating source of backlash. Appears=20
to be coming from the motor and some=20
joints, mostly the motor.
4.1.2 Rotation backlash also explains background=20
problems.
4.1.3 Interim solution is visual adjustment of=20
rotation. (Problem: reference marks are=20
hard to see.)
4.2 Spin dance results reviewed. Implications re=20
beam energy are not clear. Eugene will=20
investigate further.
5 DAQ: (Bob Michaels)
5.1 Nameserver problem over the weekend caused=20
slowness. Looking at a better long term backup=20
should the same problem arise.
5.2 Analyzing large fluctuations in data transfer=20
deadtimes. Problem appears to be competition=20
for disk drive between reading and writing.=20
Solution could be to have to drives, one for=20
reading and one for writing.
5.3 Also working on data analysis
6 Ole Hansen reports:
6.1 Getting ESPACE running on LINUX.
6.2 Temperature control equipment for Polarized 3He=20
target has arrived. Working on installation.
7 Meme Liang reports: New proposal for g + p =AE K+ + L0=20
to be distributed for comments by the end of today.
8 Michael Kuss reports working on analyzers for real=20
Compton tests.
9 Beamline: (Arun Saha)
9.1 Dispersion test with pulsed beam was=20
successful.
9.2 Position fast feedback works. Showed plots of=20
Fourier decomposition of beam position with and=20
without feedback. 60 Hz. and lower frequency=20
components almost completely eliminated.=20
Recommend all experiment run with fast feedback=20
on.
9.3 Indications are that feedback reduces energy=20
spread significantly. Some questions as to the=20
quantitative reliability of indicators.
10 ARC beam energy measurement: (Pascal Vernin)
10.1 Software for scanner controls upgraded to=20
handle 6 scanners. Request ~15 min. beam tine=20
to test.
10.2 Field measuring:
10.2.1 Meeting last week.=20
10.2.1.1 Data show strong correlation=20
between measured =F2Bdl and humidity=20
and air pressure.
10.2.1.2 Neither temperature nor=20
disassembly and reassembly of=20
equipment have any observed effect.
10.2.1.3 Will try to control humidity.
10.2.2 Jeff Kern to investigate cycling effects.
10.2.3 Planning a review of mapping procedure.
11 Detectors: (Bogdan Wojtsekhowski)
11.1 Standard detector operations restored in both=20
arms. Required replacement or repair of various=20
components (pmt=92s, HV, etc.)
11.2 Analysis of shower counters underway (Hakob=20
Voskanian)
11.3 Request that FPP people report equipment=20
failures to Bogdan.

11.5 Making progress on real Compton setup.

12.2 Software prepared for optics analysis of septum=20
magnet maps. Examples of output shown and=20
discussed.
13 Jack Segal reports on AC compressor problems in both=20
shielding huts last week. Speculates that some of=20
the detector electronics failures could have been=20
related to overheating.
14 General Announcements: (Kees de Jager)
14.1 Kees will be out of town from tomorrow (27 May)=20
until Sunday (31 May). Eugene Chudakov will=20
serve as interim Hall leader.
14.2 The move to A-wing is still up in the air.=20
Delays could go into October. Office space will=20
be critical over the summer. Groups with space=20
who will be off-site for extended periods will=20
be expected to give up or at least share their=20
space.
14.3 Run coordinator has new cell phone # (876-1787)=20
because cell phone service has been changed.
14.4 Will probably get new pager service soon. Staff=20
will get pagers. Users on-site for extended=20
time can get pagers. Others can get temporary=20
pagers.
14.5 All are reminded of Pascal Vernin=92s invitation=20
to nominate candidates for the CC.
