arm. So far, about half the help that was promised has been received.
III. Larry requests that if anyone has any thoughts on the reorganization of the physics division
(pooling of tech’s and engineers for the three halls etc.) please let him know.
IV. Tentative offer from Saclay to help with the electrical installation has turned into a dead end.
V. Budget: major effort over the past week to sort out
A. Hall A estimated needs $850K, present budget $316K. Working to alleviate the situation.
B. Priorities as declared by John Domingo:
1. Doing Physics in Hall C
2. Completing Hall A
3. Getting Hall B as close to complete as reasonable.
VI. Summer Research Student positions: Larry has resumes contact him if you’re interested
VII. Paul Rutt (Rutgers) moving here permanently as of 11 May
VIII. Engineering: (Bill Schneider)
A. SHOULD BEGIN COOLING DOWN THE ELECTRON ARM BEFORE THE END OF
THE DAY TODAY!!!!!
B. SUCCESSFULLY INSTALLED THE TWO DOORS ON THE ELECTRON ARM
LAST WEEK!!
1. moving the spectrometer this week to allow us to bring in the other two doors
2. expect to install second set of doors the week of the 18th
C. Making progress on beamline
D. Making progress on the Scattering Chamber
E. Electron Arm Quadrupoles aligned geometrically to within less than 1 mm
F. Saclay will not allow changes in the quench protection for Q1’s. No response yet on
controls changes.
G. Question from Bogdan re readiness of vacuum box between Q3 and exit window. Have all
parts will begin installation in early April.
H. Ti exit window successfully tested to 3 atmospheres
I. Statement of overall status: We will be hard pressed to take any beam in the spectrometer
in April.
1. Depending on how things are going with the cooldown and power supply setup we
will decide in 1-2 weeks on whether or not to continue pushing for April.
IX. Beamline: (Arun Saha)
A. Collecting MOU status information
B. 9th Dipole discussions with Al Guerra:
1. French will supply the coils
2. Iron will cost $25K
C. Scattering Chamber progressing well. Working on fiducialization then ready to install.
D. Meeting next Wednesday to review the Accelerator schedule. Bill Schneider says we
prefer to postpone the first attempt to get beam to the dump to 22 April.
E. Solid target mechanism ready next week
F. Beamline is in good shape
G. Meeting Thursday (14 March) Accelerator people want clarification of day 0
requirements.
H. Jian-Ping Chen says Compton Polarimeter people need information about the beamline.
Arun says they already have it.
X. Cryotarget: (Jian-Ping Chen)
A. Held meeting last Friday re design issues for Hall A Cryotarget
1. minutes have been circulated contact Jian-Ping if you want a copy.
2. P. Brindza will be Engineer in charge
B. Hall C Target status update
1. cell fabrication procedure being looked into
2. H loop has leak, can’t run
3. D target is OK! Had 20 microamps on 4 and 15 cm cells.
a) Problem 2 hours ago. CHL crashed and they had to vent $5000 worth of
deuterium into the air. CONCLUSION: We need a recovery system!
C. C. Jutier is starting to work on controls
XI. Controls: (Javier Gomez)
A. working on device drivers for Dynapower supply
B. Question re Siemens response to control changes
1. Don’t need to alter protection circuit
2. Just need isolation amplifiers at some monitoring points. Shouldn’t be a problem.
3. Signoff on changes requested by the safety committee due today (12 March)
C. Discussed possibility of farming out software maintenance; it appears that accelerator will
take responsibility
XII. DAQ: (Bob Michaels ) J. Calarco and T. Smith visiting and working on various tests of the
trigger.
A. out of time background (not there with pulsers)
B. Inclusion of Lead Glass in the trigger
C. Deadtime measurements
D. trigger patterns
XIII. Calibrations and Commissioning: (Eddy Offermann)
A. Waterfall Target:
1. Have final design configuration that should satisfy everyone.
2. Franco Garibaldi is aiming to have the target here by the end of April
B. Asking users for documentation on detector commissioning
C. Installing database on detector positioning
XIV. Detectors: (Bogdan Wojtsekhowski)
A. Nilange Liyanage working on geometric measurements of detectors
B. Preshower cabling completed, cosmic data taken, amplitude spectrum looks reasonable.
C. FPP people are going to fix Carbon analyzer frame position which is holding up work with
S2 on Hadron Arm
D. Scaler display demonstrated last week. Has reached the level of usefulness!
E. Pete Markowitz has prepared a document on the multiplexer for the pre-shower and
shower counters.

2. Planning a meeting to review the MUX (Dale Ouimette invited to attend)
F. Cables pulled last week and now have enough cables between the hall and the counting
house
XV. Exit window tests: J-P Chen asks why deflections were larger than expected. Wrong assumptions
in the calculation should not be a problem operationally. Jack Segal says “window was well
behaved and elastic”
XVI. Maja Offermann (U. of Regina Post-Doc) will start work next week on installation of S1 S2 in the
Hadron arm
