Hall A Group Meeting 4 June 1996
I. EXPINT meeting this Friday (7 June)
A. Plan to go through all experiments on the books and attempt to
identify the difference between technical requirements and the
expected capabilities next fall.
1. determine what’s ready to run
2. determine where to put effort next year
B. Meeting is open to the public.
II. Budget is tight for the rest of the year. Mortgaging next year to deal with
this year.
III. Engineering: (Bill Schneider)
A. Detectors are down
B. Survey crew working on Hadron arm magnets
C. Hadron arm has been moved to the other side of the truck access
ramp to allow concrete and steel installation to the shielding huts.
D. Ed Folts needs more welders. Anyone who knows how to weld see
Ed.
E. Vacuum system removed from Electron Dipole
F. Gas fire suppression system installed in shielding huts. Water
system still must be installed.
G. Scattering Chamber is still on the pivot. Should come out by some
time next week.
IV. Commissioning: (Eddy Offermann)
A. Spent most of the past week installing his new Mac.
B. Has noted several improvements to made in the data analysis
C. Weekly data analysis meeting to be held on Wednesdays at 10 AM
in L207 (unless otherwise announced)
V. Controls: (Javier Gomez)
A. Working on EPICS driver for the Danphysik Power Supplies
(Q1’s). Expect to be ready to test next week.
B. Starting work on drivers for servos
C. Chip Watson and his group have a scheme to unify the EPICS
distribution system. Some growing pains anticipated.
VI. Detectors: (Bogdan Wojtsekhowski)
A. S1S2 analysis underway. Working on attenuation factor for flashers
(about 100)
B. VDC’s:
1. Documentation done by Kevin Fissum.
2. Crude analysis says that things looked good during the May
run. Efficiency per wire estimated to be about 97%. Will be
discussed further during data analysis meeting tomorrow
(5 June)
3. Second student from MIT, JunCai Gao, has arrived.
C. FPP:
1. Front chambers under test
2. Working on Carbon block positioning
3. Can’t install front chambers until rail extensions are
installed.
D. Pre-shower Counters: hodoscope disassembled, making
modifications.
E. Shower Counters:
1. Cabling done by George Chang
2. Can prepare for August run without amplifiers
3. Will use temporary delay lines paid for by Pete Markowitz
4. Amplifier prototype appears satisfactory. Finalizing
contract.
F. Chamber Gas System: (Howard Fenker)
1. Things in general going well.
2. Only major uncertainty is delivery of flammable gas
detector.
3. Aiming to have system fully operational by 5 July
G. Magnet Measuring and Monitoring: (John LeRose)
1. QMM:
a) Ready to install probe into Q3
b) Bill says we will be ready to power Q3 tomorrow
afternoon. Those interested in a run through of
power supply operation should meet with Bill in the
Hall tomorrow (5 June) at 15:00
2. Dipole:
a) Bench testing components (making sure everything
that worked last year still does)
b) Starting to install mapper rails at dipole entrance.
3. Analysis: learning to use ESPACE for studying optics from
May run.
H. Beamline: (Arun Saha)
1. Reviewed data on radiation levels in the hall during the
May. Hottest spots were in the tunnel. Larry suggests
finding out what we can from the Hall C experience.
2. Target Chamber:
a) Task list reviewed
b) Rotisserie: When do we need it? Not this year.
c) Kapton Window will be needed by 1 December. Will
work up a timeline.
3. (e,e’p) energy measurement reviewed by Sophie Kerhoas
(Saclay).
a) Some large pieces arriving this week. Woke up Bill
Schneider to ask where we put them before
installation. Will place alongside the beamline.
b) Installation scheduled for August.
c) In general Sophie should see Arun about details.
I. Polarimeters and Cryotarget: (Jian-Ping Chen)
1. Compton Polarimeter:
a) Review scheduled for 18-19 June
b) Larry reports that V. Lebedev has an idea for the
setup that may save a magnet. A note is being
written to be discussed with the French group.
2. Møller Polarimeter:
a) D. Dale is at Los Alamos helping with the extraction
of the dipole
b) Jian-Ping received a 10kw power supply from SSC
surplus yesterday (3 June)
c) Karkhov making progress on target. Getting ready
to ship target and detector.
3. Cryotarget:
a) Reviewed outstanding tasks and schedule
b) There’s a lot of work to do and very few people to
do it. With the present level of committed manpower
the project is likely to be significantly delayed. With
an optimistic expectation of still undefined help from
the users the schedule is still likely to slide 2 months.
It was suggested that now is a good time to get help
from user faculty members/students/Postdocs who
are on summer break.
J. Arc Energy Measurement: (Pascal Vernin)
1. Shield wall modification began yesterday (3 June)
2. Light tubes arrived yesterday
3. 1 cubic meter of sand arrives tomorrow (5 June)
4. Transferring survey marks to the ceiling
5. Results of analysis of data on arc magnets doesn’t look
optimistic re accuracy. Full report by end of June.
6. Discussion of possible problems with storing parts in the
Hall after it becomes a radiation area.
VII. Summer Teachers: Arun Saha has resumes, contact him if your interested.
