Minutes of Hall A Group Meeting 5 November 1996
1 Fire Safety training today (5 November) at 15:00 all staff who haven’t already
attended must attend.
2 Larry needs lists of budget requests as soon as possible.
3 Weekend schedule prioritization meeting planned for Thursday (7 November)
at 16:00 tentatively in room L104.
4 Engineering: (Bill Schneider)
4.1 Hadron Arm:
4.1.1 Dipole is assembled and cooling down
4.1.2 Q2 commissioned. Got up to 1850 Amps. Ready for colloidal
suspension measurements.
4.1.3 Q3 being commissioned today. Has already seen several
hundred Amps and is going up.
4.1.4 French are making progress with Q1
4.1.5 Working on vacuum system
4.1.6 Planning for detector lift 12-14 November.
4.2 Electron Arm ready for weekend run. Now mispointing 2 cm in the
opposite direction.
5 Commissioning: (Eddy Offermann)
5.1 Analysis package is now fully operational on the SUN
5.2 Small working group formed to do analysis of optics data (Eddy,
Nilange, Mohammad, Jung Zi) Meets Thursdays at 10:00.
5.3 Discussion about “Freezing” the data format. Eddy, Bob Michaels, and
Bogdan Wojtsekhowski will discuss off-line and settle on solution.
6 Beamline: (Arun Saha)
6.1 Will need 15 more minutes to finish presentation on beam current
measurements. Will be done at Thursday afternoon’s meeting.
6.2 Status report on Arc energy measurement:
6.2.1 list of tasks almost all completed. 2 major items outstanding.
6.2.1.1 Super Harps will be ready to install in January.
6.2.1.2 9th dipole will be at TJNAF in June ‘97
6.3 Work is proceeding on local shielding to reduce background for ep
energy measurement.
7 Magnet Measuring and Monitoring: (John LeRose)
7.1 QMM promising detailed report on Quadrupoles before the end of the
year.
7.2 Studies of calculated spectrometer acceptance completed. Results
posted on www (see fttp://www.cebaf.gov/halla/minutes/acc.html)
Will set up pointer from Hall A homepage as well. (Note: henceforth
the Hall A homepage will be managed by user liaison office.)
7.3 Colloidal suspension measurements on Hadron arm Q2/3 will be done
tomorrow (6 November)
7.4 Detailed instructions for using the NMR Teslameters have been
written up. Will become part of OPS manual. Draft copy of the OPS
manual will be placed in the counting house to be reviewed and have
suggested revisions made.
8 Controls: (Javier Gomez)
8.1 Busy debugging code.
8.2 Traps installed to find out what caused erratic behavior 2 weeks ago.
9 Cryotarget: (Jian-Ping Chen)
9.1 Reviewed schedule for preinstallation and installation. Main
installation to begin at the end of July ‘97.
9.2 Preliminary drawing of the platform is done.
9.3 Techs:
9.3.1 Preparing “beer cans” for cell
9.3.2 Working with Riad on sensor wiring
9.3.3 Made repairs on Møller Target
9.4 Lars Ewell has carefully documented chemical procedures for etching
and plating. (See Lars to get a copy.)
9.5 Power supplies for Compton and Møller dipoles can be located in
building 98. Will cost about $10K for cabling. Larry says buy it.
10 Waterfall and Triggers: (Meihua Liang)
10.1 Working on problem of communications hang-up between two
Macintosh computers.
10.1.1 Eddy Offermann thinks cable is too long.
10.1.2 Bob Michaels suggests consulting Steve Wells
10.2 Working adding target interlock to MPS.
10.3 Re need for empty target. 2 possibilities:
10.3.1 Shut off water (requires Hall access)
10.3.2 Arun Saha recommends removing the Carbon target.
10.4 Arun asks about results of survey measurements of the H20 target.
Eddy has copy of the alignment group report.
10.5 Reviewed results of S2 timing studies. Some problems with double hit
trajectories noted. Problem may have to do with MLU.
11 Electronics: (Jack Segal)
11.1 Working with Rutgers on installation of straw chambers 3&4
11.2 Discussion of best way to spool delay cables. The way it has been
done may not be optimal for minimizing noise pickup. Too late now. If
we have a serious problem will have to consider respooling.
12 Detectors: (Bogdan Wojtsekhowski)
12.1 Hadron Arm: expect to be ready for lift next week
12.1.1 Long discussion re plans for the FPP with respect to the lift.
12.1.2 Status of chambers 3&4 discussed (should be ready to install in
the stack by 15-16 November)
12.1.3 Possible conflicts between FPP preparation and preparation of
basic detector package discussed in the end all agreed on
priorities and procedures.
12.2 Discussed shift schedule for this weekend (8 November)
13 DAQ: (Bob Michaels)
13.1 Working on buffering. Has made some progress but still not happy.
13.2 Fixed analysis program so that it recognizes problems with data.
13.3 Can run with pedestal suppression and achieve higher rates with less
deadtime. Instructions have been written up or see Bob.
13.4 Correct deadtime is now obviously displayed in a window.
14 Møller Polarimeter: (Sirish Nanda)
14.1 Alignment group has finished fiducializing the Quads.
14.2 Working on software for power supplies.
14.3 Victor Gorbenko reports on status of Target.
14.3.1 Outlined the setup
14.3.2 Showed results of tests on power supply performance and
pickup coils.
14.3.3 Target movement system discussed with Accelerator. All parts
equipment ordered.
