Minutes of Hall A Group Meeting 1 July 1997
1 General Announcements: (Kees de Jager)
1.1 Congratulations to all participants for the
timely completion of experiment 89-003. (There
are still some 100 hr. on the books but the
“should” list is complete.)
1.1.1 Experimenters will evaluate the quality of
the existing data before discussing an
extension of time. Deadline for submission
of a proposal for an extension of
experiment 89-003 is 15 July.
1.1.2 Comment for 89-003 and FPP is that 1st
priority goes to their respective “should”
lists and since the 89-003 “should” list
is completed FPP now has 1st priority.
1.2 Incident early this morning: Burning paper
smell was noticed in the counting house. After
some searching the source was determined to be
a carelessly thrown away cigarette igniting the
mulch outside the counting house. Smokers are
admonished to dispose of their butts carefully.
(Fully extinguish and place in an appropriate
container.)
2 Møller Polarimeter: (Sirish Nanda)
2.1 Officially began commissioning last night at
midnight.
2.2 Detectors have been checked out.
2.3 Waiting for beam. (CHL is down)
2.4 Power supply problem: Møller Q2 tripped off
requiring reset in the Hall. Cause and ways to
effect a remote reset are being investigated.
2.5 LN2 cooling on target works well.
2.6 Polarized source is looking good.
2.7 Planning to run 3 pass and 5 pass beam to A and
C respectively at magic energy providing
longitudinal polarization to both halls
simultaneously.
2.8 Running until Thursday (3 July) at noon.
3 Installation: (Ed Folts)
3.1 Staging for the July shutdown
3.2 Working on spare parts list for work area in
EEL.
4 Electrical Engineering: (James Proffitt)
4.1 UPS repair on Dynapower (Dipole) power supplies
seems to have worked. We haven’t seen any
brownout related magnet trips since
implementation. Problem with UPS’s was bad
batteries. Testing UPS’s is now on the
checklist.
4.2 Sirish requests EPICS hookup for Gaussmeters in
the Møller Polarimeter.
4.3 Possibility of putting a UPS on the Waterfall
target controls discussed.
4.4 Working on routines to automate Dynapower
startup.
4.5 Bogie problem to be investigated at next
access.
5 Run report experiment 89-003: (Arun Saha)
5.1 Reviewed statistics on beam availability etc.
(Data taking 33.6% of allotted time)
5.2 Problems:
5.2.1 Data Analysis has run into data storage
problems. Bob Michaels suggests talking
with Ian Bird in the computer center to
find out what resources are available and
how to access them.
5.2.2 Survey of Sieve slit location is needed.
It’s in the works.
5.3 Kevin Fissum wants to know where or to whom to
report a summary of shift participation. Arun
will collect such data for now.
5.4 John Domingo asks for a list of angles and
energies used to present at the Director’s
Council meeting.
6 Controls: (Javier Gomez)
6.1 Working hard on various projects (I had a small
lapse in attention and missed the details!)
7 Waterfall Target: (Meihua “Meme” Liang)
7.1 Planning to test the vertical encoder during
the July break. Present problem is either the
encoder or its power supply.
8 Cryotarget and Compton Polarimeter: (Jian-Ping Chen)
8.1 Cryotarget:
8.1.1 Assembly of main loop is underway.
8.1.1.1 Working on upstream window.
8.1.1.2 After window is completed will
start on cell and cell block
8.1.1.3 Expect the whole loop to be ready
in 3 weeks.
8.1.2 Design:
8.1.2.1 Transport Fixture: almost finished.
Should be finished by the end of the
week.
8.1.2.2 Dummy and solid target assembly
should be done next week.
8.1.3 Controls: Still have a long list of things
to finish. Expect about 1 month to finish.
8.1.4 Still don’t have a task list for target
installation. Coordinate with Jian-Ping
and Mike Seeley.
8.2 Compton Polarimeter:
8.2.1 Had a meeting last Friday to define
issues:
8.2.1.1 Cooling Water for power supplies?
Ed Folts says we have enough.
8.2.1.2 Compressed Air? Ed Folts says it’s
not there but shouldn’t be a problem.
8.2.1.3 Concrete for tables? Ed Folts needs
drawings.
8.2.1.4 Have long list of things to be done
before January shutdown.
8.2.1.5 Expect large contingent of French
collaborators to arrive at the end of
July. Will start having regular
working meetings at that point.
8.2.2 Space problems in the EEL discussed.
8.2.3 Ed Folts asks what his responsibilities
are re vacuum for the Compton. They are
working with Jim Parkinson on design and
installation. With great ceremony and a
big smile on his face, Ed crosses Compton
vacuum off his list.
9 DAQ: (Bob Michaels)
9.1 Parity group working on a new helicity control
scheme.
9.2 Modifying ESPACE to make it backwardly
compatible. Will recognize old KUMAC files.
9.3 Planning to test hardware this weekend with
CODA 1.4
9.4 Next week will shift priority to CODA 2.0
10 Beamline: (Arun Saha)
10.1 Be foils have been ordered.
10.2 BPM’s for fast feedback and OTR’s (Optical
Transition Radiation beam profile monitors) to
go in during July shutdown.
11 ARM training:
11.1 Kees de Jager, John LeRose, and Arun Saha have
taken the classroom training and passed the
written examination. Still need hands on
training for certification.
11.2 Putting together new list of trainees for the
next round. (Javier, Sirish, Bogdan....?)
12 Current Monitoring: (Geraud Laveissiere)
12.1 Suggests that we could save time by doing our
current calibration simultaneously with Hall C
rather than sequentially as we’ve been doing.
12.2 Meme says that when she asked to do this MCC
balked because of the total high current.
12.3 Speculation is that there may be a current
limit on the Faraday cup that prevents this.
The situation needs clarification.
12.4 Geraud also reports that OTR’s will require
some time for testing.
