Minutes of Hall A Group Meeting 23 September 1997
1 General Announcements: (Kees de Jager)
1.1 Re last week=92s =93Scientific and Technical=20
Review=94. (Peer review part of Laboratory rating=20
for DOE) Counts for 300 out of 1000 total=20
points. JLAB got 270 points. Committee was very=20
positive about the scientific program. These=20
observations based on the verbal close-out. A=20
written report is being prepared. Thanks to all=20
who contributed either directly or indirectly=20
to the review.
1.2 Beamline magnets are not automatically turned=20
off when there is access to the Hall. We want=20
to keep it that way therefore safety=20
regulations must be followed carefully.=20
Specifically, it is recommended that all M=F8ller=20
and Compton Polarimeter people have lock and=20
tag training.
1.3 Since the M=F8ller and Compton Polarimeter=20
magnets are active elements they will need=20
OSP=92s or TOSP=92s
2 House Warming Party: Next Friday at 1900 at Michael=20
Kuss=92 house.
3 Installation: (Ed Folts)
3.1 Re Inergen test on Electron arm shield house.=20
We failed. Didn=92t sustain low oxygen level for=20
a long enough time. This is an improvement over=20
the last time when we never achieved the=20
desired oxygen level. No word yet on remedial=20
actions to be taken.
3.2 New Snouts are finished and will work at 12.5=20
degrees.
3.3 Electron Arm is at 12.8 degrees but can go to=20
12.5.
3.4 Exit pipe is pumped out and ready.
3.5 Thanks to all who helped clear things out of=20
the Hall.
3.6 Shielding blocks installed on the inboard side=20
of both arms.
3.7 Safety platforms are finished. Side platforms=20
not done, will wait till January.
3.8 Ion chamber mounts at raster are in place.
3.9 Working on Hadron dipole power supply=20
modifications.
3.10 Hadron arm is set for electrons
3.11 BeO target in old waterfall is 0.020=94 thick.
3.12 If you need any welding done let Ed know right=20
away. Our welder is out sick.
3.13 Electron arm exit window has been changed.
3.14 Diffuser inspection still not done and hasn=92t=20
been removed from the list.
4 Cryotarget: (Jian-Ping Chen)
4.1 Closed window last Thursday (18 September) and=20
tried to pump down. Couldn=92t get below 6 Tor.=20
Concluded it was leaking through the target.=20
Found and repaired the main leak over the=20
weekend. Still have some small external leaks,=20
tracking down and repairing. down to 1E-4 to=20
1E-5 range.
4.2 Will survey tomorrow ( Wednesday 24 September).
4.3 Plan to start pump down tomorrow PM and begin=20
cooldown on Thursday.
4.4 If all goes well will be ready for beam next=20
Wednesday (1 October). This is a 2 day delay.=20
Will have no impact on the upcoming experiment.=20
Further delays will effect the experiment.=20
Since the next whole year=92s experimental=20
program involves use of the Cryotarget,=20
priority will go to target commissioning.
4.5 Controls are almost completely checked out
4.6 Safety documentation has been reviewed twice by=20
John Mark. Going through the final revision=20
now.
4.7 Kees commends Jian-Ping and others associated=20
with Cryotarget for their heroic efforts.
5 Jack Segal reports:
5.1 Repairing cables and analog delays for Electron=20
Arm
5.2 Cable pulling earlier in the week went well.
5.3 Recommends that if you need any miscellaneous=20
cabling before the start of the run that you=20
make your own temporary setup. There=92s no more=20
time for permanent cabling.
6 James Proffitt reports:
6.1 Hadron Dipole Dynapower (power supply)=20
modifications should be finished by the end of=20
the week. UPS should be here by the end of the=20
week.
6.2 Points out that pointing system testing will=20
require unimpeded access to the target area for=20
1-2 days.
7 Al Gavalya reports:
7.1 Paul Brindza has no news re septum magnets.
7.2 Susan Esp working on the Radiator. Estimates 4=20
weeks to complete.
7.3 Joyce Miller is trying to put together drawings=20
of the sieve and collimators. Anyone with=20
information or drawings should contact her. We=20
have no original drawings. Rutgers says they=20
sent them to us (and apparently didn=92t keep=20
copies) and we can=92t find them (They=92re not in=20
the binder where Eddy Offermann says he left=20
them). Ultimately we may have to survey the=20
collimators make our own drawings.
7.4 Al is working on the polarized 3He target.
7.5 Position and alignment transducer mount is out=20
for bids.
8 Gary Rutledge reports that shift schedule is ready=20
(except for the 2 extra days at the end) and will be=20
distributed shortly along with a request for sign-
ups for the last 2 days.
9 Detectors: (Bogdan Wojtsekhowski)
9.1 Both detectors are inside their huts.
9.2 Both VDC=92s in their final positions, checked=20
out, and ready to go.
9.2.1 Have long list of maintenance items for=20
VDC=92s
9.3 Outstanding job is to remove protective sheets=20
from VDC=92s
9.4 Current indicator on power supply doesn=92t work.
9.5 Gas Cerenkov:
9.5.1 Electron Arm ready to go
9.5.2 Hadron Arm: 6 pmt=92s with wave shifters=20
installed. Hope to be finished this week.
9.6 Cosmic ray tests underway. Small problems being=20
addressed as they come up.
10 DAQ: (Bob Michaels)
10.1 ESPACE 2.4 released over the weekend
10.1.1 Database and kumac files will need to be =20
assembled for upcoming experiments Michael=20
Kuss will head up effort.
10.2 Raster being checked out. Looks OK.
10.3 Cabling is reestablished on the trigger. Still=20
some adjusting and fine tuning to do. John=20
Calarco will be here tomorrow.
10.4 Still working on getting CODA 2.0 running=20
reliably.
11 Controls: (Javier Gomez)
11.1 Signed off at MCC for test of software for=20
target motion interlocks. Suggests that Jian-
Ping look into exactly what can and can=92t be=20
masked.
11.2 Tested readout of LVDT. Looks OK.
11.3 Working on readout of floor markers.
12 Magnets and Optics; (John LeRose)
12.1 Extended target acceptance studies now posted=20
on the web (http://www.cebaf.gov/Hall-
A/news/minutes/acc.html)
12.2 Reports on preliminary findings re changes in=20
optics of Electron arm in going from 0.4 to 2.0=20
GeV/c.
13 Beamline: (Arun Saha)
13.1 Shows locations of new ion chambers in the=20
Hall.=20
13.1.1 By the target
13.1.2 By the raster magnet
13.1.3 By the Compton Polarimeter
13.2 Has written up a revised procedure for=20
delivering CW beam to the Hall using extra=20
diagnostics from the new ion chambers.
13.3 Cautions run coordinators to make sure that=20
beam tune is =93good=94 for all equipment in the=20
Beamline not just the experiment on the floor.
13.4 M=F8ller Polarimeter meeting this Friday. Room=20
and exact time still pending.
13.5 Re Arc Energy measurement: Pascal=92s written=20
