About the Conference:

Third International Conference on Quark Confinement and the Hadron
Spectrum (Confinement III) will be held from June 7-12, 1998 at
Jefferson Lab in Newport News, Virginia USA. The aim of the
Conference is to stimulate progress in the theory quark confinement.

There will be four main sections to the Conference:

Mechanism for confinement: flux tube configurations and strings

Lattice theory and numerical simulations

Effective hamiltonians; quark models

Confinement phenomenology and experiments

exceed 1 page, for consideration as a contribution to the parallel
sessions. Abstracts may be submitted in one of the following three
ways only:

There will be a Conference Proceedings, consisting of invited talks and
contributions accepted for presentation in the parallel sessions.

Registration:

The fee for registrations received with payment prior to April 1, 1998
is $250 USD. An e-mail acknowledgment of registrations will be sent
upon receipt of Registration Form and Payment. The registration fee
for payments received after April 1, 1998 is $300 USD. The fee
includes registration materials, a copy of Proceedings, all social
events, admission to all sessions, coffee breaks, and a Jefferson Lab
tour.

Payment for registration must be by credit card (Visa, Mastercard,
American Express and Diners Club), by check, by International Bank
Transfer in US Dollars, or by cash in US dollars at registration.

Financial Support:

There is a limited amount of financial support for students. To be
considered, a letter from the student's supervisor must be received
before March 15, 1998. Letters can be air or express surface mailed,

Companions:

Companion names must be included on the Registration Form if they are
to receive a name badge and attend the Companion Reception. There will
be a fee of $25 USD for companions wishing to attend the Conference
Banquet on Wednesday, June 10th. This fee may be enclosed with the
registration form or paid at the registration desk.

Cancellation Policy:

Cancellations prior to April 1, 1998 - a 25% cancellation fee will
apply.

Cancellations after April 1, 1998 - a 50% cancellation fee will apply.

All refunds will be made after the conference.

Blocks of rooms are being held for participants from June 7 - June 12
as follows:

Jefferson Lab Residence Facility

On site at Jefferson Lab, these private guest rooms are comfortably
furnished like any modern hotel room. Each one is fully equipped with
telephone, climate controls and cable television. Telephone service
includes free local calls and voice mail. Computer terminals and
workstations are available in most of the guest rooms, as well as in
the common area. For guests wanting a little extra something, premium
room packages include in-room refrigerator, coffee maker, hair dryer
and complementary toiletries. Common areas open to all guests include a
fully equipped kitchen, dining area, laundry facilities and the large
lounge area . Snack and soda machines are located adjacent to the
common areas, which are accessible by residents 24 hours a day. The
nearby Jefferson Lab cafeteria is open weekdays for breakfast, lunch
and snacks.

Participants are responsible for making their own lodging arrangements
(ask for Confinement III Conference rates). Reservations must be
confirmed by May 7, 1998. After this date rooms will be confirmed on a
space available only basis at the conference rate. The hotels do
accept credit cards (Discover, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and
Diner's Club) and require one night's deposit for room and tax.
Deposits are refundable with receipt of at least a 48-hour cancellation
notice prior to arrival. Check-in time is after 3:00pm on the day of
arrival and Check-out time is 12:00 noon on the day of departure. All
participants wishing to extend their stay through the weekend should do
so when confirming reservations.

Transportation:

BY AIRLINE: There are three nearby airports serve Newport News.
Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport in Newport News is 2
miles away, Richmond International Airport is approximately 55 miles
away, and Norfolk International Airport is approximately 30 miles from
the Lab. Regular limousine service is available from each airport.

BY RAIL: Newport News is served by Amtrak from Boston, New York,
Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and Richmond with daily
service.

BY AUTOMOBILE: Jefferson Lab is easily accessible from Interstate 64
(exit 255 A), about midway between the cities of Williamsburg and
Norfolk.

Insurance:

Confinement III cannot accept liability for injuries or losses
sustained from accidents or other occurrences that may arise in
connection with the conference. We recommend that participants
subscribe to appropriate travel and health insurance.

Welcome Reception

There will be a welcome reception starting at 6:30 pm, Sunday, June
7th at Jefferson Lab.

Evening Mixers

Each evening a time will be set aside for participants to get together
socially, discuss the day's events, and arrange for dinner at one of
the many local restaurants.

Monday Evening: "Wines from Around the World":

All participants are invited to bring a bottle of wine from their
country to share. The wines will be collected at registration,
labeled with your name and country, and served at the first evening's
mixer with a variety of international snacks.

Tuesday Evening: "Old Virginia Night with a Hint of Thomas Jefferson":

Wines and Beers from Virginia wineries and micro-breweries along with
Virginia peanuts and other favorite traditional Virginia morsels.

Thursday Evening: "All American Ice Cream Social":

Enjoy the atmosphere of one of America's oldest traditions and
experience the taste of an old fashion ice cream float.


BBQ Lunch at Hampton University

There will be a Southern BBQ picnic lunch for conference participants
and companions on Tuesday, June 9th under the historical Emancipation
Oak on the campus of Hampton University

The acclaimed Mariners' Museum, with its world-class maritime
collections, will be the site of the conference banquet on Wednesday

provide companions the opportunity to meet other guests, to ask
questions, and to receive information:
