Post-Doctoral Research Associates in Nuclear Physics

There are openings for two or more postdoctoral fellows at the Nuclear
Physics Laboratory of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Closing date for applications is March 28, 1997.

The senior staff at the Laboratory are Doug Beck, Paul Debevec,
Dave Hertzog, Roy Holt, Ron Laszewski, Naomi Makins, Alan Nathan and Steve
Williamson. The primary activities of the group presently include
spin-dependent deep inelastic scattering at HERMES, Drell-Yan measurements
at Fermilab, several experiments at Jefferson Lab (including
photodisintegration and Compton scattering), measurement of the anomalous
magnetic moment of the muon at Brookhaven and investigation of the weak
neutral current of the proton at MIT-Bates and Jefferson Lab. The
arrangements for participation in the program by post-docs are flexible;
we are presently focussing on support for two areas.

The first focus area is the study of the neutral weak current proton. The
SAMPLE experiment, which will measure the strange quark contribution to the
proton magnetic moment, will be in its main data-taking phase over the next
two years. Approximately 15% of the data have been taken during
preliminary runs at MIT-Bates where the experiment is being performed and a
publication is being prepared. A total of about 2000 hours of beam time
have been approved with A priority by the PAC. The follow-up experiment,
G0, will measure the strange quark contribution to the proton charge and
magnetic form factors in the Q2 range from about 0.1 to 1.0 GeV2. This
experiment, to be performed at Jefferson Lab (formerly CEBAF), has been
approved and funded. The magnetic spectrometer will be constructed and
tested over the next three years; the contract for the magnet will be let
in early 1997.

The second focus area is the HERMES experiment. HERMES is an international
collaboration of over 25 institutes whose purpose is to perform a complete
program of spin structure studies on the nucleon. Due to its open geometry
detector and particle identification capabilities, HERMES is unique among
spin structure experiments in its ability to determine the polarization of
the individual flavour components of the nucleon, and consequently the
separate polarizations of valence and sea quarks. HERMES has been taking
data at the DESY accelerator facility in Hamburg, Germany since the spring
of 1995, and will continue to do so until at least 1999. Several upgrades
of the detector, specifically designed to enhance the acceptance and
particle identification of the experiment, are currently under review. The
upgrade of the existing threshold Cerenkov detector to a RICH will greatly
enhance the precision with which HERMES can measure the polarization of the
strange sea, providing the world's first direct measurement of this
quantity. Additional upgrades are also being proposed, which may
ultimately yield the first measurement of the polarization of the gluon
field. The University of Illinois is heavily involved with these upgrades,
with the development of the experiment's Monte Carlo simulation, and with
research into polarized target technology which promises to substantially
increase the luminosity of the experiment in the near future.
