POSTDOCTORAL POSITION
TRIANGLE UNIVERSITIES NUCLEAR LABORATORY
DUKE UNIVERSITY
The radiative capture group at TUNL expects to fill a postdoctoral
position with a starting date in the fall of 1997. Our research
effort is presently focused on the study of very-low-energy (below
80 keV) polarized radiative capture reactions relevant to nuclear
fusion and nuclear astrophysics, especially reactions relevant to the
solar-neutrino problem. We are also interested in further studies of
few-body systems. Current experiments are utilizing our new Compton
Polarimeter to measure gamma-ray polarizations resulting from capture
reactions initiated with polarized beams. The new observables which
can be measured have been shown to be extremely sensitive to the effects
of meson-exchange currents and other non-nucleonic degrees of freedom.
We are also developing a new research program using the nearly
monoenergetic and polarized gamma-ray beam produced at the Duke Storage
Ring Free Electron Laser facility. Experiments will be aimed at a
measurement of the DHG Sum Rule for the deuteron, and tests of the
photopion threshold predictions of Chiral Perturbation Theory.
The review of applications will begin 1 June 1997, but applications
will be accepted and considered until the position is filled.
Applicants should submit a vita and a brief statement of research
interests, and should have three letters of recommendation sent to:
