NIKHEF
Postdoctoral Research Position
in
Intermediate Energy Nuclear Physics
The Netherlands' National Institute for Nuclear Physics and High-Energy Physics
(NIKHEF) invites applications for a postdoctoral research position with the
Internal Target Group.
At NIKHEF an electron beam, accelerated up to 700 MeV in the linear electron
accelerator MEA, is injected into the stretcher storage ring AmPS. The intense
(> 100 mA) circulating current makes it possible to perform experiments with
gaseous targets of polarized or unpolarized nuclei. At present a complete set
of instrumentation is being implemented to allow experiments with polarized
electrons in AmPS.
The experimental program of the Internal Target Group focuses on the study of
few-body nuclear systems. An extensive program has been started to measure
tensor asymmetries in elastic and inelastic scattering off deuterium. The
electric form factor of the neutron will first be studied in neutron knock-out
from polarized 3He. Future studies are foreseen on the electro- excitation of
the delta resonance and on vector-polarized deuterium. The low density of the
gaseous internal targets allows the detection of low-energy recoil nuclei. This
will be used to advantage in, amongst others, a study of coherent and quasi-
free pion production and of multi- nucleon knock-out.
This position is intended for a person with several years of experience in
experimental nuclear physics and its associated technologies. A two-year
contract (with a possible one-year extension) will be offered. Detailed
information can be obtained from Kees de Jager (e-mail: kees@nikhef.nl,
telephone: (+)31-20-5922143).
Interested applicants are invited to send a curriculum vitae, including their
publication list, and three letters of reference to:
