One of the features of cdev is the ability to refer to a piece of data
within a data object by its (string) name, even though the data is
internally tagged by an integer. The mapping between the name and
integer tags are kept in a hash table, and the user may obtain the
integer tag and use that for higher performance.
But what happens when the data object is sent over the network? We are
already doing this successfully, but would like to define some standards
for how it should be done.
