Hare Virus
CIAC has received many inquiries regarding the Hare virus. The virus has been
confirmed by numerous anti-virus vendors. It is time-activated with the dates of
August 22nd and September 22nd.
The Sacramento Bee published an article which gives a good overview of the Hare
virus. No one really knows how many systems are infected but the virus is
reported in the USA, Canada, UK, Switzerland, Russia and The Netherlands.
For detailed information, refer to the anti-virus vendors listed below.
DAMAGE: The Hare virus will delete all data on the hard drive (i.e., C:\) and
drives A: and B:.
CIAC recommends immediately downloading the following anti-virus software
and taking the appropriate corrective action. As always, sites should follow
regular backup schedules to protect against data loss.

For sites that have Norton Anti-virus software, Symantec has an updated
definition set.
