I had been experiencing random system lockups for the past several
weeks. After disabling almost every feature and program I could think
of (and replacing some of the hardware), I believe I have traced the
problem to some Office 95 components.
The culprits are "Microsoft Office Fast Start" and "Microsoft Office
Find Fast Indexer". These programs are installed in your Startup
folder by Office Pro. I don't know if the Standard Edition uses them
or not. Once I removed these programs from the Startup folder, my
system crashes disappeared. I do not know which of them is the
problem but I suspect the indexer since it runs itself as a background
process every two hours or so. My system never locked up while I was
using it. It always happened during lunch or overnight.
I hope this is helpful to someone else. It was driving me crazy.
