Dear EG1 collaborators,
the meeting today was well attended, so my minutes can be brief. Some of the major
issues discussed where:
- Schedule: Although we are making progress on all fronts, the target may be
delayed by yet another week - we will be working on speeding things up and
at least avoid further delays (which might threaten our ability to run at all).
We were planning to have a test run over the next weekend; however, this will
only occur if it doesn't distract from or impede other work necessary to get
ready for the "real thing".
- There is still some substantial work necessary to make the target software
run smoothly (and improve the interface). Please contact Renee Hutchins
(e.g., coming Monday around 10:00 am in the EEL) if you want to help.
- There are also some so-far neglected areas of the DAQ that need help. Contact
Tony Forest <tforest@CEBAF.GOV> if you want to help.
- There is some uncertainty whether we will be able to analyse data right away.
It seems that there may be a SDA based solution for at least hitbased tracking
ready at or soon after beginning of our run. However, it seems RECSIS needs some
serious attention.
- We discussed the possible run plan and trigger and torus field conditions.
As a strawman proposal, we will use the runplan listed on our web site and
assume that we will run about 75% of the time with B = 0.15*E/GeV*Bmax and
25% with reversed B field. Our trigger will likely contain EGNinner*EGNouter,
some kind of Cerenkov cut (still to be discussed) and, as soon as possible,
level 2 trigger. Obviously, this will have to be tried out at the beginning of
the run.
- We will continue to discuss the runplan and running conditions among the
spokespersons. If needed, we will have a phone conference. We will make
a decision on the photon part of the run around middle of November.
- I have requested (once again) that EVERY institution send me a list with
dates of availability ON SITE of their senior researchers, postdocs and
students. I restated that all thesis students need to be on site beginning
NOW and take responsibility to learn enough about the target to become
"target experts" on shift (with backup from on-call experts). I hope some
postdocs will do the same. Also, I need to know who can take over several
days/weeks at a time as run coordinator (again, with dates of availability).
These people need to be onsite pretty much all the time, attend the 7:30/8:00
am meetings, hold daily run progress meetings, monitor run progress, develop
daily action plans, etc.
I have posted a preliminary list of EG1 thesis students on our Web site.
Thesis topics are clearly tentative only; we have to wait and see what kind
of data we actually get before we decide who analyses what.
- We need to get serious about documentation. We need a COO (Conduct of Operation)
document with special attention to safety issues by the end of next week.
We will have a meeting coming Monday (9/14) after the CLAS meeting (i.e., around
11 a.m.) to organize this effort. Clearly, we need input from the UVa group
and the Genova group (maybe Raffaela can help with writing the document);
if somebody has sample documents (e.g., the Hall C Gen COO document) that we
could use as a template, please bring it along.
- We will continue to have weekly status meetings until the run begins, at which
time we will have daily meetings. Next week, the status meeting will be in
L207, on Thursday, 9/17, 10:30 a.m. We will probably move to the Counting House
for all subsequent meetings.
Thanks for coming, and now let's get back to work!
