POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE
The University of Manitoba’s Particle and Nuclear Physics Group has an
immediate
opening for a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will work on a
contract basis with
TRIUMF, Canada’s laboratory for Nuclear and Particle Physics.
The group’s research is focused on experimental studies of fundamental
symmetries,
including low energy searches for physics beyond the Standard Model via
parity violating
electron-proton scattering at TJNAF (the Qweak experiment), and cold and
ultra-cold
neutron beta decay experiments at LANL and the SNS, as well as low
energy QCD tests
using parity violation in hadronic systems at the SNS. The Qweak
experiment measures
the weak charge of the proton and is expected to run for one and a half
years, starting in
2010.
The successful candidate for this position will be based at Jefferson
Lab and is expected
to focus on and contribute in a significant manner to the Qweak
experiment at TJNAF.
This includes detector development, installation and commissioning as
well as
participation in production data taking and analysis. He/she will also
be strongly
encouraged to participate in our other experiments and to develop ideas
for new
experiments.
The person we seek will ideally have a recent PhD in experimental
accelerator, atomic,
nuclear, or particle physics (or a related field), with several years of
graduate level
hardware experience in one or more of the areas of detector, beam line,
or data
acquisition development, or similar instrumentation projects.
All applicants must be able to enter and/or reside legally in the United
States and must be
available to travel to various research institutes for extended periods
of time. The initial
appointment will be for one year, with possible renewal for up to two
additional years,
depending on mutual agreement and availability of funds.
All qualified candidates are invited to submit resumes, including three
letters of reference
and salary expectations preferably by e-mail to:
mgericke@physics.umanitoba.ca
Review of applications will begin November 1st, 2008, but the position
will remain open
until filled. For more information please contact Dr. Michael Gericke at
(204) 474-6203
or via e-mail as indicated above.
