SIMC and fedora

Hi SIMC users -

As many of you may have noticed, all scientific computing (batch farms
as well as interactive farm nodes) have migrated to the Fedora operating
system. Unfortunately, the Absoft fortran compiler presently used to
compile SIMC on the JLab linux machines is not available on the Fedora
nodes.

Work is under way to migrate SIMC to use the gfortran compiler available
on the Fedora machines, but this work is not yet complete. However, I
recognize that a lot of you may be gearing up to work on proposals for
the next PAC and likely need to have SIMC available.

At present there is an easy work-around. The Absoft compiler is still
available on jlabl1 (a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 machine) and
fortunately, when compiled on RHEL3, SIMC seems to run just fine on
Fedora (I have done a few tests to make sure the output is unchanged).
So until SIMC has been fully ported to gfortran, make sure your code is
either in your CUE home directory or on one of the group disks (since
jlabl1 cannot see the work disks), compile your version of SIMC on
jlabl1, then run on either the batch farm or ifarml* machine of your
choice.

Let me know if you have any problems or questions. When work is complete
on the porting of SIMC to gfortran, I'll send out an update.

    Regards,
    Dave
