Speaker: Mark Strikman (Penn. State Univ.) Title: Microscopic nuclear structure: recent progress and directions for future studies Abstract: I summarize analyses of the recent experimental studies which confirm presence of large two - nucleon high momentum correlations in nuclei dominated by pn correlations. The observed pattern in combination with previous studies of parton distributions in nuclei poses important constrains on the probability and structure of nonnucleonic degrees of freedom in nuclei. Color fluctuations/ transparency related mechanism of nucleon deformation in nuclei appears to be consistent with the current constrains and found to depend strongly on the nucleon virtuality. Directions for future experimental studies of short-range correlations in nuclei and in particular non-nucleonic degrees of freedom using high momentum transfer electron - nucleus scattering processes are outlined.
