Property Protection: Controlled Materials

The Department of Energy requires the Lab to control and account for all sealed sources, radionuclides and other nuclear materials.

All quantities maintained at the Lab are controlled, tracked and/or reportable to international databases; the loss or misuse could result in increased hazards or disruption of the Lab's mission.

Potentially contaminated property and materials previously used in accelerator beam operations are also controlled.

Usually, these materials are used in small quantities to calibrate instruments and detectors. Some of these materials may have been or will be used as target materials.

Notify JLab International Services as soon as possible if:
  1. you need to bring property previously used in or around accelerator beams or
  2. you need to bring the following materials, or like materials, to JLab:
    • Americium-241
    • Americium-243
    • Berkelium
    • Californium-252
    • Cesium-137
    • Cobalt-60
    • Curium
    • Deuterium
    • Enriched Lithium
    • Helium-3
    • Iridium-90
    • Neptunium-237
    • Strontium-90
    • Thorium
    • Tritium
