"Jefferson Lab considers no activity to be so urgent or important that we will compromise our standards for environmental protection, safety or health."
Christoph W. Leemann

As you use the information contained on this site, please don't hesitate to contact us if you have questions, comments or recommendations.

Although critical, ISM is only one step towards achieving an outstanding safety culture. Other steps include:

  1. A wide array of tools (manuals, procedures and processes) that help us do our job safely.
  2. Motivated workers, who understand that safety is everyone's responsibility.
  3. Engaged management that ensurs the safety culture and tools are constantly assessed and upgraded.

ISMS is about more than just working safely. It is a system that ensures the protection of the public, Jefferson Lab staff and users, the environment, and contributes to the overall quality of the important work done at the lab. The ISMS is only effective when the right tools are applied at the right time.

Not only is it the right thing to do, it also satisfies numerous requirements put in place by the Department of Energy through the lab's operating contract.

Although our safety culture is strong, and our ISMS is in place, we still have work to do before our system is truly INTEGRATED.

Our goal is to continue to work and make progress towards our goal of true integration.

Jefferson Lab's ISMS upgrade activities have become a routine part of doing business at the Lab and will continue. Many of you will be asked to participate in planning and execution of improvement activities and all of you will hopefully see positive results.

Our short-term goal is to be "as" prepared as possible for an inspection to be conducted by DOE's Office of Health, Safety and Security in June 2008. This schedule shows the major activities occurring between now and June and this webpage will be updated to provide the most recent and relevant information as it is developed. Since the DOE assessment team could possibly interview any of you, it is important that you review the information contained here and actively participate in other planned ISMS activities.

Preparation for the assessment is only the short-term goal. We will stay committed to our long-term goal to build an ISMS that is protective and fully supports the important work we do here.

Key Dates:

  • 1 May - JLab program documents, procedures, etc. due to DOE
  • 19-23 May - Initial DOE visit
  • 2-13 June - DOE inspection
  • 8-10 July - Follow-up visit to discuss findings

Time remaining until inspection :

Your Workers Safety Committee is leading the charge to help us all improve the safety culture. Among various other initiatives, the committee is sponsoring five teams that will be hitting the floor early in 2008 with the objective of identifying additional ways to improve the ISMS. Each team will focus on a particular aspect of ISMS and will be asking many of you for help. For more detail on these teams and their missions, click below:
