3120 Appendix B

Typical Outline for a Radiation Safety Assessment Document

This appendix specifically addresses radiation and activation issues associated with the delivery of beam to an experiment.  It includes an explicit calculation of the Experiment Operations Envelope (EOE) planned.  It must identify Safety Issues associated with the planned EOE and identify mitigating measures that have been incorporated into the apparatus and run protocol to ensure the experiment operation stays within the established Operations Envelope for beam operation in the hall, as defined by the Jefferson Lab Final Safety Assessment Document (FSAD).  It must also address radiation associated environmental hazards in compliance with the Lab’s Environmental Management System (EMS), in particular Environmental Management Procedure (EMP-04), Project/Activity/Experiment Environmental Review using the Hazard Identification Checklist in ES&H Manual Chapter 3120 Appendix H Checklists for Experiment Preparation.  It must also address decommissioning plans for the target and beam-activated components as appropriate

All EH&S issues associated with beam operations and beam-induced radioactivity must be address in the Radiation Safety Assessment Document (RSAD).

Outline:

I.              Introduction

II.           Summary and Conclusions

III.         Calculations of Radiation Deposited in the Experimental Hall (the EOE) (note - it will be based on the beam requirements list, and explicitly state both the maximum instantaneous radiation load expected and the total radiation load for the complete experiment as defined in the beam requirements list.)

IV.        Radiation Hazards (including those to the public and the environment)

A.        From Beam in the Hall

B.        From Activation of Target and Beamline Components

V.           Incremental Shielding or other Measures to be Taken to Reduce Radiation Hazards

VI.       Operations Procedures

(Reference Jefferson Lab standards for radiation -related work in the hall.  Also define any unusual radiation-related operations procedures specific to this experiment.)

VII.    Decommissioning and Decontamination of Radioactive Components
