Introduction
Hazardous materials
are sometimes used at Jefferson Lab—for example, strong acids are used to
surface prep the superconducting cavities.
Jefferson
Lab personnel are trained to identify situations which pose imminent hazards to
people or the environment. Effective
hazard response includes operational characterization, assessment, effluent
monitoring and surveillance which in the case of oil or chemical spills requires specially trained responders.
To help minimize injury and damage from an
accidental spill of hazardous
material, Jefferson Lab’s Chemical Assistance Team provides quick response
to an incident. The team is made up of
volunteers from around the laboratory; they are trained to recognize hazards
and secure the area, emphasizing victim assistance.
In the event of an oil or chemical spill,
call ext. 4444 for assistance.
